Which SSD is better, the Crucial P5 Plus or the Samsung 980 Pro? Both are fast, but which is better? (Reliability/Speed/Overall)

Look for number of writes before failure.  That determines longevity.  There’s going to be a comparison online somewhere.  As far as a speed goes the random write speed is the interesting one.
The 980 had a recall or something in the recent past.  There was some sort of nasty problem or other that got fixed.  If it’s not a post-problem drive that would need to be addressed.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

performance is similar, so should I just judge based on price?

Yep.  You may want to check and see how long a given thing can keep up the fast speed though.  Often it’s for only a few seconds.

980 pro is faster, and probably more reliable, but you do have to update the firmware, as there was a bug in the earlier FW that killed the drive, or the NAND.

More reliable is more likely than faster. That was the thing the 970 had on everything else in the consumer space.  Not speed.  A significant question is how long can it maintain top speed, and what does it drop to?  Because they all do.

samsung makes chips in house.  They’re less likely to release bad stuff.  They’re not the speed kings though.  Crucial just assembles things.  Which means they can buy from anybody.

Im looking good SSD (PCIe3 or PCIe4) 500-512GB as bootable disc for my laptop. With DRAM, low temp (35-42 degree) and in good price.

Because ssd will be working in laptop, I need SSD disc without heatsink.

Any suggestions?

Nvme m key?  sata?  Something else? Pcie4 is usually faster than pcie3 for nvme.  Sata is capped at 600mb/sec which is slower than even slow nvme so the standard move there is buy as cheap as possible.  Everything will be the same speed.  SSD doesn’t really define things anymore.  It used to when SATA was all there was but not so much any more.  The “something else” usually means an older or lowball machine. B key or B&M key is usually the one you see there for nvme.  Both of those are 600mb/sec too so back to buy cheap.  Regarding the first question Samsung is the company with the higher rep.  I don’t know if they’re the Best Buy right now though.  There’s an argument for “the cheapest one you can find with cache”

My laptop is DELL Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1. I have instruction for DELL 7786. I dont know that its the same. I need PCIe 3.0 x2 NVMe or PCIe 4 M.2 2280 500GB-512GB. But it could be 1TB. I didnt check it. I dont want Samsung disc. In laptop there is no space for heatsink. I need NVMe disc with power efficiency like Hynix P31.

Now in my laptop there is Toshiba 128 GB M.2 2230 PCI-E x2 NVMe (KBG30ZMS128G).

If it’s anything built in the last few years it will be nvme M key.  You can just leave the heatsink off.  When buying off brand NVMEs the thing you need to check is the specs.  Continuous write, random write, number of writes before failure, cache size, and the hard one, which usually needs a review, when the thing slows down (usually takes a few seconds but it varies a lot.  You can usually buy one without a heat sink. The three brands I’ve heard of being good are Sabient, Samsung, and crucial.  Sabient is known for speed, Samsung for write number, and crucial for price.

Sabrent: there is a problem with the warranty of this company's drives. There is problem to register full warranty for this disc. And there is problem to get a replacement model. The company does not want to send a replacement model and does not want to respect the warranty.

Samsung: these drives reach high temperatures and the 9x series has problems and these drives often fail.

Crucial disc like Crucial P5 Plus needs heatsink because it reaches a temperature of 82 degrees Celsius. Its very high for laptop without heatsink.

Sorry. Wrong models 😄

I don know nuttin about anyone’s service policy.  I do know that while the drives do reach high temps it’s not bad for em the same way as cpu silicon.  Iirc there’s an LTT video on it.  My understanding is that if you do almost all reading the thing might last only 20 years instead of 50.  If you lose it like a regular hard drive it will hit its write max looong before degradation even has a chance to get to it.  It’s just not a concern for most people.  Also that thing about Samsung was one error in an early firmware IF you’ve got that specific firmware (it’s not even available anymore) AND you don’t update it, you could have a problem.  There basically hasn’t been one for a long time.  My Samsung 980 pro didn’t even come with it it was a later version several months ago.  A hiccup.
