Using SATA Ports Prevents Computer from Booting

actuallythedog

Hello Everyone, I really need your help!

Computer Specs:

OS: Windows 10 Pro (Ver. 22H2)

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x

GPU: Evga 2060

Motherboard: AsRock B450 Steel Series

Memory:  CORSAIR Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB DDR4 2133 MHz

PSU: EVGA 750w

Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 250 GB 512 (M.2)

Storage 2: Samsung 870 Evo Sata 2.5'' 1TB (SATA SSD)

Storage 3: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 3.5'' (SATA HDD)

Storage 4: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 3.5'' (SATA HDD)

My Computer is acting weird.

Basically, If I try to use any of my SATA-connected storage devices the computer does not boot. When I unplug all my SATA devices and have only the M.2 Connected, the computer boots into Windows with no problem. I also cannot get into the BIOS, fast boot is not enabled, and using Windows Recovery to force restart into UEFI does not work either. I was hoping to maybe change boot priority to see if that was the problem but I cannot get into the BIOS. At first, it was just the SSD that was having issues, when that was plugged in, the computer would not boot, as I tried to troubleshoot, the problem got worse and now with any of the SATA drives connected the computer refuses to boot.

Here is what I have already tried:

  • Trying different SATA Ports
  • Changed out the SATA Cables
  • Force Restart of the entire system

I am stuck, this issue happed out of nowhere. I was troubleshooting for 2.5 hours with my very tech-savvy friend and nothing we could think of worked. My fear is that I somehow fried the SATA ports, however, I am writing this on the computer that's broken so I don't think I completely destroyed the computer. Performance has not changed either. If anyone thinks they can help, I am all ears!!! I will be watching this closely, answering any questions that come up.

You can't get into the Bios at all huh? Have you tried reset the cmos battery? See if you can get into the bios after a cmos battery reset. The sata controller or something else on your motherboard might be dead/dying.

remove all storage, boot into bios, hot plug sata drives to see if they are recognized.

Also, from your manual:

Storage

• 4 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors, support RAID (RAID 0,
RAID 1 and RAID 10), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug*
• 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors by ASMedia ASM1061, sup-
port NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug
* M2_2, SATA3_3 and SATA3_4 share lanes. If either one of
them is in use, the others will be disabled
