Audio Translation devices?

Hi everyone,

For some background I'm a librarian. As I'm younger and can navigate my way around computers and phones I'm gaining a reputation amongst our patrons as tech savvy. One of our elderly patrons called asking about language translation devices. Looking into these, I feel completely lost. I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the brands I'm seeing, and video reviews I'm finding don't inspire much confidence in that what I'm seeing is "real" rather than something made up to sell an expensive product.

With that out of the way, does anyone here have any familiarity with these kinds of devices? Are there any you'd recommend that I could pass along to this patron?

All the ones I've seen so far suck terribly. Imagine combining text-to-speech with a crappier version of Google Translate, and then slap on a crappy text to voice engine.
