Need help picking between Ryzen and Intel

Go to solution Solved by Leandro Fernandes,

Considering you won't have much to spare for a GPU with that budget, either option will yield around the same fps in gaming seeing as you'll probably be GPU bound. Me personally, I would go with the Ryzen chip just because it's "unlocked" and I can have fun with it.

You should also consider going for used parts like @NO101 recommended. If you are comfortable trusting second hand sellers, you'll get higher performance for the same price.

I am looking to build my first gaming pc in about a month or so (still saving) and I want to get as much for my money as I can. Budget is around £650 (United Kingdom) and I’m trying to pick between Ryzen and intel. I will mostly game (aaa titles, online shooters like apex and titanfall 2) but this pc will also have to do schoolwork. I was looking at the i3 12100f since it seems everybody is raging about how good it is for people on a budget however the ryzen 5 5600 I’ve looked at has 6 cores which I’ve been told is important for upcoming games that are starting to utilise them. The ryzen is more expensive but the motherboards make up for the price difference when you add it together so any ideas on which i should pick? Any help is greatly appreciated

Are you telling me, your total budget is £650, does that include GPU?

Yes but that is just for the pc I already have peripherals and I can save a bit more if needed

I think you are really pushing it with £650, I would suggest going used on a 3000 series ryzen tbh, gives you the ability to upgrade down the line if needs be.

What do you have so far, anything, an old PC for a case, hard drive etc?

the 5600 is better than the 12100f (5600 is six core instead of 4 cores) but it depends what gpu your planning to pair it with e.g. my 5600 can be good up to a 3070 or 6800 xt but the 12100f would probably be good up to a 6700 xt or 3060 ti. Then again the 12100f is cheaper

Another suggestion... Something like this, not ideal, but I have one that I use for streaming away from home and it is rather nice.

I would recomend buying a used gpu and CPU from CEX, Ebay and you can porbs get a RTX 3060 or RTX 3060TI (200 budget), and then pair it with a used CPU, motherboard, Ram combo for about 350, you should be left with 100 for a case and a 128gb m.2 SSD I would also try to get a used drive from ebay or get a 512 m.2 SSD

Just bumping this, fits the budget, has a decent core and GPU, battery will be worn out being second hand but just use it like a desktop.

Even a mobile 2060 is a good GPU for this price range imo
