Hello, I'm a new builder in the US looking for a upgrade to my first PC (I built it two weeks ago) and need help finding some parts. I usually do pretty good at this, but now that I'm looking for more expensive items its harder to find the right stuff, and I'm scared of making the wrong decision. So this upgrade will be centered around one thing, the ASUS RTX 4090. I'm blessed to receive this, but obviously, I kind of need other parts too. (My last post was about a Ryzen CPU which I planned to use, but decided to scrap it) So before we start, here's my specs!

In advance, I am not home right now, sorry if I make a mistake. (Edit, I made a mistake!!! These are my current specs if you are confused.)

CPU: Intel I5-12600K

Mobo: Gigabyte b660 (cant remember if theres more to that title)
Ram: Kingston Fury 8 gigabytes x 4 (Couldnt find the model number, came in a old PC)
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3070 OC 8 gigs (Rev 2.0)
Case: Pop fractal air, black RGB.

Storage: ADATA legend 2 terabyte

PSU: Corsair 850 watt bronze (I know I'm sorry)
CPU cooler: NZXT Kraken 120

So, I need help mostly with these parts:
1. Cooler, (Really depends on CPU, some said I spent too much on it but now I'm getting told its not even close to good enough)
2. Ram (Another Iffy one, might need to switch to DDR5
3. MOBO/CPU (I'm very lost on this, So many different opinions out there)
4. PSU (Found a good one, its a 1000 watt 80+ gold, I spent a lot of time finding a good one)

Thats about it, 90% sure I can fit the RTX 4090 in my case, worst case scenario I go for a cheeky vertical mount. So lets talk budget. I can pay for all of this, That doesn't mean I'm going to go around throwing money on whats the best in the market. I really like saving as much as I can, So I just need something that can keep up with the 4090. But that also doesn't mean I want parts exploding when I turn on my PC because I cheeped out.

Thank you if you took the time to help out, I will be active answering every reply. I did my best on this question and sorry if it seems like I'm asking for a lot. Any amount of info will help, big or small.

why are you upgrading so soon mos pcs last about 5 years

They can last even longer then then that! It's not about how long it lasts, I'm just not content with the performance of my PC, Either way I get to sell the parts.

alr I just dont want you wasting your money on something you don't need as for the build how much are you looking to spend and what do you do

I hit 700W on an i5 with a NHD15

Also I'm 14 so please just confirm anything I say with someone more experienced

  1. True, a 120 AIO will likely cause the CPU to seriously underperform. An air tower like the AK620 or a 280/360 AIO would be much better.
  2. Do you know any of the memory specs?
  3. If you haven't bought the CPU then you should probably be looking at an i5-13500 or i5-13600K. Possibly the i5-13400 if budget requires it. Until the CPU is picked it's pointless worrying about a motherboard.
  4. If the PSU is not in Tier A on https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ it may not be a "good one".

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Congratulations on your new PC build 🍻

Based on your current specs and the need to upgrade to support the RTX 4090, here are my recommendations:

  • CPU Cooler: Since you're going with the Intel i5-12600K, you'll want a powerful cooler to keep it cool under load. Perhaps change it to an i5-13600K instead? The NZXT Kraken 120 is not sufficient for neither CPU. I recommend going for a 240mm or 280mm AIO cooler.
These will provide better cooling performance and keep your CPU at lower temperatures.

  • RAM: The RTX 4090 is a powerful graphics card that requires a lot of memory bandwidth to perform at its best.
DDR4 RAM will be sufficient, but you'll want to go for a higher frequency like 3600MHz or higher to ensure optimal performance.

  • CPU/Motherboard: To support the Intel i5-12600K/i5-13600K and the RTX 4090, you'll need a high-end motherboard that supports the latest PCIe 5.0 standard and a Z690/Z790 chipset.

  • PSU: You're right to invest in a good power supply to support your build.
A 1000W 80+ Gold PSU is a good choice, and it will provide enough power to support your CPU and GPU under load.

In terms of budget, these parts will cost more than your current build, but they will provide a significant upgrade in performance and ensure that your system can handle the RTX 4090. Depending on your location and availability, you should expect to spend around $1000 to $1500 on these parts.

I work at a very large Oil field company, (wont say where as it will give my general location) And as I said I can spend whatever is necessary but stil want to save money, as I said: "So lets talk budget. Wow thank you! You have really helped a lot, pretty sad about the CPU cooler, Didn't even get to use it for too long. But I'm happy I can look for some better options. Again, thank you for the info!

Sorry for the miscommunication, the specs I listed are what I already have.  I hope to get back to you on the ram when I'm back from work, sorry for that. And yes the PSU is on A teir.

120mm have a place but it's mostly for small form factor/low power systems. I would advise you to get the largest AIO cooler that your case allows so normally it's a 240/280/360 from EK or Arctic. NZXT coolers grade well too.
2. Ram (Another Iffy one, might need to switch to DDR5

Assuming the speed is around  3600 mhz ddr4 is fine and the move to ddr5 is negligible.

3. MOBO/CPU (I'm very lost on this, So many different opinions out there) Your current combo is fine.

The 4090 is a pcie 4.0 gpu so unless you are trying to overclock just use what you have.

Should work fine heck the 850 may work that's really close for a 4090. Nvidia actually recommends a minimum of 850w for the 4090.

Answers under the questions above honestly if the system is working now you may be able to just drop the 4090 in and go. I do think a 120mm aio will limit the cpu but that has nothing to do with the gpu.
