NVR Options

I'm putting up a couple of cameras around a family members house, and thought I would ask around here to see what people are using as NVR's. I use a Synology at home, but was looking into something a little easier for them.

 

(1) Amcrest NVR -- Reviews say that the app is terrible, but it might be an easy option to just work after setting up DDNS

 

(2) Self hosted? - Tons of options out there, has anyone had good luck with one in particular?

 

(3) Just buy a used Synology because it just works.

 

Any opinions appreciated!

I have been using blue iris for a while in a vm that had a gpu passed to it and it has been working good. The gpu is to accelerate the video encoding instead of storing raw from the camera stream. Works great in pc but haven't tried the android app for if since I don't access it from a phone.

I'll have to spin one up on my test machine. That looks like a clean option. Have you used motion detection on it?

I don't think you'll find a much more user-friendly locally hosted NVR than Synology's. 

 

Since you'll be their de facto tech support for this system, you'll want it to be as easy to use and foolproof as possible. Plus if their Internet connection is good enough, you can connect it to yours for mutual off-site backups.
