My alert came about 40 seconds early and it was rather quiet. I doubt I would have heard it with my headphones on (but nothing playing through them) if my phone had been in the next room.

Also, apparently alot of people are reporting that they havn't recieved an alert.

I might be experienced, but I'm human and I do make mistakes. Trust but Verify! I edit my messages after sending them alot, please refresh before posting your reply. Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Please remember to mark solutions once you have the information you need. Expand this signature for common PC building advice, a short bio and a list of my components.

 

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

He/Him - I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. I do think they should have a mute button on the alert. The alarm is deliberately unpleasant, so I'd rather be able to mute the sound so I can read the alert rather than just dismissing it. It's also too easy to dismiss it I'd say. Click OK and it's gone with seemingly no easy way to go back to read or see the alert once you've dismissed it.

This is new for you over there? Here in the States we've had the EAS for years, and the Emergency Broadcast System for decades before that. It's the descendant of CONELRAD, a system for broadcasting news in the event of nuclear attack during the Cold War. Today it's mostly used for civic emergencies and severe weather events.

 

The alert tones aren't just unpleasant to listen to, they contain encoded data that specifies the type of emergency happening. An EAS test will sound different to a tornado watch, which will sound different to an AMBER alert.

 

 

Every media market has a "primary insertion point" station that all the other local stations listen to. When the PIP is instructed to trigger an alarm, everyone else does as well. Typically this means the PIP takes an audio feed, and the other stations take theirs. If everything's set up right, it's effective.

 

Sometimes stations do a poor job of securing their encoders, though...

I mean it's not like the UK is that prone to natural disasters. There's mainly floods to worry about. And at the very least you can turn it off, although I don't really see why you would that besides maybe hiding your phone. But I doubt this is going to see much use.
