SD and Micro SD

Are micro SD cards and full size SD cards basically the same things, but with different sizes?

 

One of my devices needs an SD card to update its software, it specifically says that only SD cards work, I've tried with an USB and nothing happened.

 

Would a micro SD card with a full size SD card adapter work?
