Evening all I'm looking to use a old Optiplex 3040 I have for a NAS / Minecraft server it has a single 128gb SDD that should do fine for minecraft / OS

My question is as don't see another other for internal drive would i be better getting another bigger SSD and having it all on a 2TB drive or was thinking a External Drive that could power off when not using but worried about up time if did leave it on and speeds as would be over USB

This is all for local Network nothing fancy

what kind of NAS OS where you planning on using? if free/trueNAS, you don;t want to use USB drives.

TBH just for ease and its free on the Optiplex with a key built in gonna run windows 10

There's no reason it shouldn't work in that case, it just won't be ideal.

I'd worry more about the drive staying too hot in its enclosure.

Which version of the Optiplex 3040 do you have?

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

thinking a External Drive

External drive is cheaper than desktop internal drives, so shuck it !

Internal drive can be setup to spin down too.

Tape the SSD anywhere in the case. It will work fine as cache / app drive.

Then use a USB as boot drive. It's not recommended, but since you are on a SFF, you don't have much choice.

Wait... Do you refer to the 3040 SFF or 3040 micro?
