Hey ,

More of a software person but delving into hardware side of things lately so bare with me please .

so I'm buying some more ram 16GB is not cutting it , I know I need to get the same Ram sticks , but does it have to be exact ?

I have 4 ram slots 2 used in a dual channel already 2 x 8GB . The Sticks are :  Corsair CM4X8GD3200C16K4 DDR4  .

Now the main problem, a quick google search shows nowhere to buy this exact RAM anywhere ( UK Based )

So would I be able to get away with getting 2 stick of : Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16

I would assume so , as if i'm not wrong  its Clock speed Is the same, As well as same size (2 x 8 GB) , and both DDR4

I just need some confirmation or advice on how to go about this , as said hardware is not my strongest point , but going more deeply this year (starting with RAM apparently 😂)

Thanks in advance for any help 🙂

If you want guaranteed compatibility, they need to be the exact same sticks, so same PCB, same XMP profile from the same manufacturer, and same memory ICs. Problem is even if the model number is the exact same, that does not necessarily mean that the memory IC is the exact same and therefore you can run into some compatibility issues even amongst the same kit.

From my experience, the compatibility between any two kits of the same mid-range speed bin (3200 or 3600 CL16 for instance) is 80% that everything just works, 15% that it works but XMP does not, and 5% that it doesn't boot/unstable at JEDEC, and the odds don't really change that much if they're the same model number if they were bought at different times (if they're from the same batch they're going to be the same IC, so if they're bought on the same day from the same store they're probably the same). If you want to just buy a 2x8GB kit to add to your existing kit to upgrade to 32GB, just buy whatever the cheapest kit you can find in the same speed bin as the odds should be about the same as buying a matching kit, though given the pricing differences nowadays it might make more sense to just buy a 2x16GB kit instead and sell your 2x8GB kit.
