M.2 NVMe SSD in adapter not recognised in OS

I have a HP prebuilt, I wanted to install an additional SSD, I have an open PCIe x1 slot, so I bought a PCIe x1 to m.2 adapter but I can't see the drive in an OS.

In BIOS hardware diagnostic, the drive appears and passes the tests, but in a OS (Windows 10 or Linux) the drive is not recognized.

Additionally, when booting it takes a really long time (3-4 min) to get to the bootloader. When disabling the PCIe x1 slot (where the adapter and SSD are) it boots immediately.

Any idea what is going on?

 

SSD: Intel 660p

Adapter: RYRA 1pc NVMe PCIe M.2 NGFF SSD To PCI-E X1 Adapter

Bump... any Idea how to fix it?

Also if not in this configuration, can I buy a sata ssd enclosure and put my NMVe drive in it or it won't work with sata?

Have you gone into Disk Managmement and allocated it and assigned a drive letter? When installing new a new ssd you need to do that first before it shows up in windows. Considering it showed up in the BIOS I think that might be all you need to do!

I can't see the SSD inside the OS so I can't assign a letter to it.

I have a GPU in the x16 slot and no iGPU, so I can't put the SSD in the x16 slot to test.

I had some old motherboards in my hands, that had the top PCIe x1 from chipset, just not working anymore, but usually the one PCIe x16 from CPU was working fine.

Can’t really help you much, if you can't diagnose it yourself on that motherboard on your config (lack iGPU) 

you would have to grab other PC and see if the adapter and ssd are working fine there. 
if they do work on other PC, the it's probably the motherboard fault.

Unfortunately I don't have a second PC to test the adapter but the SSD works fine.

Could it be a Intel RST Driver issue? I've been looking into in for a few hours but I can't get any solid information. I'm scared to change the driver because I don't want the one I'm using now to stop being recognised.

I tried to load the newest recomended Intel RST driver from HP page with a bootable windows USB and load driver method while "installing", but it gave an error after tying to install for a few minutes.

Alternatively how can I connect the drive?
