Why is my 3k$ laptop faster than my 10k$ desktop?

Niber

Hi, I just bought a gaming laptop (Asus Rog Strix 16) thinking that even though it will be slower than my desktop I might be able to use it for some less demanding work on it, compared to the much more expensive desktop computer my employer bought for me last year.

However to my surprise I feel like the laptop is actually performing faster, so I downloaded 3dmark and was again surprised that the laptop received a much higher score (at 1080p)

*The laptop is brand new, the desktop is 1 year old.

*The laptop is RTX4000 series whereas the desktop is 3000-series. But still a desktop 3090 should be way faster than a mobile 4080.

I tried upgrading my desktop OS to a fresh Win11, but I received the same score. Does this make any sense to anyone?

Both were running in Performance power plan with newest drivers. I don't think the desktop is throttling because it's an enormous case with really strong cooling.

There's a massive per-thread performance difference between a Threadripper 3960X and an i9-13980HX.

Were both running Time Spy at the same resolution?

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

At first glance i can see that your PC performs quite a bit worse than the average in 3DMark, so there might be something wrong can you list the importeant components of those two systems

EDIT: just saw that you have a Threadripper 3960X in your desktop... that thing is ot great for gaming what explains the lower CPU score... but in my opinion your graphics score is still lower than i would expect from a 3090

Yeah it was probably not a great idea to get such a core-heavy CPU, still tho I'm surprised

as far as i know the benchmark is running the test at the same resolution, regardless of the native resolution of the display, so that sould not make a difference

Yeah both set to 1080p and i can confirm that it was just rendering a small area on that 32:9 screen

I get a GPU score of 19k (no GPU OC for that score) with my 6800XT, so your 3090 should get at least a 20+ k score. How are your gpu temps?

Hmmm thought 3DMark wasn't resolution dependent, anyway I use WQHD

A local PC builder company built it. But I checked and the gfx is in the correct PCIE 16_1 slot

Unfortunately this is New Zealand so everything is x2 cost

I just did a Topaz AI Video Enhance test (also GPU heavy), where the desktop performed 12% faster than the laptop. But still it should be much faster than that I would have thought,.

80% load means a CPU related bottleneck.
