Alot of the resoulutions were squashed, to 1/3 mid. monitor up & down, still going across the screen. This was with the generic driver, but Mate never had that issue. Wondering why KDE did that?

What version of KDE are you using and what distro is it? We need this to see if there's a bug report we can reference to help you as several older versions of KDE plasma had a lot of issues with monitor resolutions especially if you told mate to set a config system wide (or made a custom Xorg.conf in /etc)

So I setup a test manjaro system installing the mate community edition in a VM, installed the kde desktop and was unable to replicate the issue using that. I can check again on hardware.

Is this using intel/amd, or nvidia gpu?

AMD/Nvidia

Why would the generic driver cause issues in KDE and not Mate?

KDE is more or less fully hardware accelerated where mate is not. In particular on amd, you need the amdgpu driver to interact with mesa and opengl

So I did need the Nvidia driver. Oh sorry when I put AMD/Nvudia that was my CPU/GPU, thought both were wanted. 😄

more or less yeah, but that also really depends on your gpu model too. ANything older than 10 series should actually work with the noveau driver.
