Hi!

I've been asked to handle our network setup at home. Our connection is through an LTE box, and I'm planning on having 2 access points with the same SSID broadcasting so you can seamlessly go from one side the house to the other. My question is: are RJ45 surge protectors necessary? We live in a house without a lightning rod, and the access points will be in the attic so I can't unplug them in thunderstorms. Is there any danger of them dying from lightning hitting nearby and inducing a current in the long-ish patch cables?

Also, if any of you great people have any suggestions regarding which APs I should choose, I'd be grateful :D, I was thinking of using the Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Lite, but I'm not quite sure.

Thank you in advance for any answers tech tips :D.

J

Unless you're screwing them to the rafters on the roof there isn't any danger.

Although why the attic and not the ceiling?

We have wire mesh in out walls, but not the ceilings. The WiFi won't go through the walls, but it has less of a hard time going from the attic.

Makes sense, higher up would help alleviate that issue then.

You're fine then, no worries about lightening. If it strikes your home far enough in to hit the APs you've generally got other things to worry about at that point.

Surge protector want scratch a lightning strike if it chooses to ground that way. Usually it doesn't because lightning typically wants to find ground, not bounce around between switches via hair thin twisted pair.

Grounded patch panel > surge protector.
