Ram Troubleshooting

Okay so I haven't gotten as far as using that ram test program but I haven't needed to yet. My problem so far is that my PC is recognizing 32 gbs of ram but is only reading 16 as usable. So far I've cycled all of the sticks around the slots and tried powering up with just two at a time. Every time the system reads only 16 gb so all the sticks seem healthy so far. I watched some youtube tutorials and did the advanced systems paging file thing and the msconfig allocated memory thing but my PCs defaults didn't have any memory restrictions set up in there so there was nothing to change. I'm quite stumped at this point and can't find any more references scouring google or youtube and am sorry to have to rely on you folks again for assistance x.x

Any ideas?

System is a i7-3770, 32 gbs of ram (hyper x 1600 ddr3), 1080gpu

Have you checked the cpu socket for bent pins?

Or just reseated the cpu?

I had the thought that maybe the ram slot is dirty. I had tried to spray it with canned air before but i guess if that's the issue it wasnt sufficient. (i upgraded from 16 gbs to 32gbs so the other two slots were unused a while)

is that a possibility? the computer has never given me any stability issues and is running and gaming and such just fine right now.

It can be, I’ve repaired many motherboards that had a single bent pin in the memory field. The memory pins are extremely fickle.

If there is a bent pin in your A1-B1 channel then you wouldn’t have noticed anything wrong until this problem. And this is just something to check as a troubleshooting step, just to rule out a CPU socket issue.

I didnt see anything bent x.x a friend asked if i should update the bios. I tried getting to asus' website to do that but no luck it seems like their site is down, assuming that would help.

also the mobo is an asus maximus V with four ram slots, not eight, so it isn't a ram installment issue. Just to include that.

I ran a memory diagnostic with the windows memory check but didn't see anything come up from that.

what I would do, go into bios and check if all 4 of them are even recognized.

you have to look if those old motherboards have this function.

what do you mean only 16 Gb usable, please post a picture what you mean. where does it show you 16 gb of 32 gb

get cpu Z

you can check every slot if it is recognized. you also get all the information you need. like are those 4 sticks have the same Part Number.
