Temperature readings on processor bounces around going up to 40 degrees plus then eventually hovers around the 18 - 22 degrees, all this is in idol state no gaming or activity other than watching videos, is there a problem with my processor I don't want to strip it down if I can help it. Occasionally I will get a red led light on mobo indicating the cpu which stays lit after Windows has booted.  I7 12th gen cpu if that helps at all.  Gigabyte elite as mobo.   Why does it happen is it malfunctioning?

try reseating your CPU. This is what fixed the problem I had like this a few days ago but this won't help the high temps in idle. That has to do with the background tasks being loaded such as steam, teams, discord, spotify and rgb monitors such as icue. Can't do much to change that unless you disable some of them for startup (the ones you dont need)
