Hi, I'm new to LTT and I'm here because I don't really know what I'm exactly looking for but I'm in a bit of a problem with my storage. You see, I play many games and record many clips because I like to practice video editing on my clips. So here's the problem:

My storage is running out and it's not something that I can solve just by installing another drive. At first I thought cloud storage services are pretty neat, I could use that but I'm from a country where 10 usd/month sounds great but isn't exactly "cheap". I have a spare pc that I can install many drives in, what I want is for my videos to be transferred/uploaded to the pc via lan cable (also idk if it's possible to do this if my rig and server is connected to a router instead of being connected directly to each other via lan) and I can basically "share" the link of file/video or somehow give access to anyone so they can download it to their own computer. (like how you share gdrive/mega files). So.. what do I want? I'm really new to this, and I probably won't understand many terms.

All that matters is that both PCs are on the same network.

That's the hard part, because you'd have to both run the server and expose it to the Internet. Then anyone else can only download as quickly as your home Internet connection's upload speed can be.

I recommend building that spare PC into a NAS for your own use, then if you need to share something you can upload it to Dropbox/OneDrive/Google/etc.

Anthony's "Your Old PC is You New Server" video is a good starting point. Windows file sharing is easier to set up than TrueNAS, and if it's only for you (or a small handful of users) then it's perfectly adequate.

How good is your internet? Some relatively "poor" countries still have amazing internet, like Romania for an example.

If you are one of the lucky ones with access to cheap yet fast internet, i would go for a SATA SSD. They are at the lower end becoming very price-competitive to HDDs.

If not, then HDDs should suffice. They aren't the best at gaming, but they are viable. Some loading screen might take a few dozen seconds longer, but nothing major.

Internet services usually are priced with first world income standards in mind, so unless you can find some exception to that with really competitve regional pricing, it will probably be better to self host.

Ill just post cost per gigabyte of HDD and SSD right now in PCPP, sorted by the cheapest.

"Oh its only twice in price per gigabyte, thats not a lot!" to put it into context, thats 25 cents difference, youre $4.37 in deficit for every equivalent of warzone 1.0 install. And this is failing to consider that the cheapest in cost per gigabyte isnt really things you wanna run in a NAS anyway, Something more reliable would be 10 cents per gig extra.

In a cold storage or data hoarding scenario, speed doesnt matter as you can compensate it with caching frequently used data, reliability and cost matters more. And yeah, id say even in OP case, practice clip edits at 1080p is fine to be done straight from a HDD based NAS as long as the local network is fully at 1 gigabit or even 2.5 gigabit.

Agreed, it all really comes down to your budget and expectations.

But as i pointed out, if your internet is good, space doesn't matter as much, and stuff like read speeds and theoretical long term reliability start to matter more, if you can just install Warzone with your Romanian $10/month 1GB internet.

In OPs case the ratio of gaming to clips matters a lot.

Games are easy to uninstall and reinstall with a fast internet, but if you have terabyte of raw video, then that's what you have. In that case HDD is by far the best choice.

25 mbps download/ 10mbps upload, unlimited* bandwidth (*I think it's 2TB) for around 13 usd atm. Minimum wage in my country is around 150 usd and imports like computer equipment (ssd/hdd/mobo/cpu/gpu/anything related to computing) from other countries are considered "luxury items" and are heavily taxed. It might seem cheaper to use ssd but it's not so cheap here. And the ones that are cheap and available are mostly cacheless unlike the samsung or good branded ones that are again considered a "luxury item". I don't really need a fast disk though. My recordings are usually 720p 60fps because I'm just practicing right now and usually the clips aren't really that space consuming standalone. However I have so many clips now that I've been forced to stop recording anymore. The reason why I need it to be remotely accessible is a few people I know want raw clips as well to practice and sending them these many clips is really tiring me out.

Thanks! I've already seen the video, the only problem is the remote access and that really is quite difficult because of my isp as well.

UGH I spent an entire day looking up everything. I can do everything except for remote access because of my isp and my isp provided modem. So trash I absolutely despise PTCL but they're the only major isp in my area. I just bought 2TB google drive. It was actually quite cheap because of regional pricing (3.88 usd after conversion) so gg everyone.
