Grounding question

Go to solution Solved by johnt,

Here are my responses and opinions….

1) You are worrying too much. The concept of grounding yourself while building a PC is a YouTube thing. People in real life don’t do it.

2) You need an extension with all three ports. All you need to do is connect the wall to the power supply and the PSU is grounded. Once the power supply is attached to your case, plug in the power cord to the PSU and the wall, and your entire case is fully grounded. All you need to do is touch the metal components of the case and you are set.

3) The extension cord and the PSU do not need to be switched on. Ground is not part of a “switch.”

4) That extension cord looks fine.

5) This advice does not apply to cheap knock off PSUs you can easily find on the internet. If the manufacturer follows the minimum of electrical codes, you won’t have an issue. If it’s a brand name product, you have nothing to worry about.

Can I use any UK extention cord to ground my self when building my pc?

And can other devices be plugged in the extension cord?

Also does the extension have to be switched on? (I know to turn off the PSU switch)

My extension cord

What do you mean by that?

Here in the US, we have cheapo wires that have the hot and neutral wires only. They omit the ground cable completely. I am not sure if you guys have the same thing in the UK. These types of wires are okay for some devices like light bulbs. But they should be avoided for your use case since you need the ground.
