This is dealing with some retro hardware so some people may not be able to answer this one.

Motherboard: Asus SP97-V

CPU: Intel Pentium MMX 233

RAM: 48MB generic stuff

HDD: Dual Seagate Medalist drives (this was da beast in the day)

Case: AOpen AT Case

PSU: Generic AT PSU

Here's the problem.

The CPU was first running at 233 MHz with the multiplier set to 1.5X (stock). I then decided to push it harder, so I went into the case and refers to the chart printed on the PCB, which told me to set some jumpers to run at 4X. Fine. So I set the jumpers according to the chart. When I did that, the CPU suddenly clocked down to 200MHz. Does anybody know why this happened?

Windows 95...needs a reinstall, I think some files are corrupt as when I open command.com it thinks that it is an illegal operation before actually opening the DOS prompt.

why don't you buy a computer exponentially faster for like 20$? sorry have to be the first to say this. but if its just for fun, have fun with your retro project!

It's just a for-kicks retro project. If it catches fire I think there is a fire extinguisher on the cabinet next to the pencil sharpener.

Old man... First, what os are you using? Bios version?

BIOS version I need to find out, but I am running Windows 95.

This is my teacher's rig, by the way, but he let me play with it and he keeps a screwdriver out for me. Awesome dude.

@WinNut did you check your jumpers? Maybe something got missed or looked over... I don't think that CPUs this old had throttling, and if it's clocking DOWN, and had throttling, maybe the voltage went too high and it throttled? What junpers did you change?

There was a set of three labeled BF0, BF1, and BF2, and next to it was a small chart telling you how to position each jumper for each multiplier.

I have to look into voltage, there is a similar row of jumpers below the CPU socket. I have to investigate those.

Also according to the manual there are jumpers to turn up the bus frequency, I may want to look into those.

Do you think I should up the voltage to 2.9 (2.8 stock)?

EDIT

The manual mentions "WARNING! DO NOT OVERCLOCK YOUR PROCESSOR" but the thing is 18 years old, like I am going to follow that damn warning.
