dying ssd?

 ive had this for about 2 and half years now

Last time it was trimmed (Windows defragmenter "optimize")?

 

What does Corsair SSD toolbox say?

What does Hard Disk Sentinel say?

Health is at 55% , the SSD has a lot of flash memory sections that can't be written anymore, so the controller has to juggle around them and figure out where to write the data and how to spread it around those areas that can't be written anymore, in order to extend the life of the ssd. 

 

The SSD has a pseudo-SLC write cache, on the 960 GB is up to 30 GB ... on the 240 GB it's probably proportionally less, maybe up to 5-10 GB of pseudo-SLC write cache (but to have this much you'd need to have around 15-20 GB of actual free SSD disk space) 

On the 960 GB model, you can write at up to 3 GB/s until those 30 GB get filled and then write speed drops to 1 GB/s 

The 240 GB model has a standard write speed of up to 1 GB/s (because there's fewer flash chips on the ssd, so the controller can't write in multiple chips in parallel to get a lot of speed) so  as soon as the write cache is full, the speeds will drop to even lower than 1 GB .. wouldn't surprise me to see 300-500 MB/s

You can restore the speed degradation by doing a secure erase on the drive (that deletes everything and restores the SSD).

Also, if you've never done the optimization, and Windows didn't do it for you - you have to do it and keep doing it in regular intervals.

i freshed reinstalled windows does that do anything

i used the secure earase in  my bios and it worked perfectly

Don't forget to optimize (in the Disk Defragment) from time to time.

Right. Trimming (SSD Trim operation) does garbage collection and memory cell refresh so it keeps the SSD health and speeds in check.

awesome well thank you for the help

i was gonna call it quits with this ssd till you told me to do that 

just thought it was a dying old piece of gargabe that couldn't be saved. 

i also haven't really bothered with the ssd trimming cause it didn't seem necessary but i guess it is will keep doing that from now on just trimmed my other ssd's aswell the ones that didn't need secure erase

Keep up the good work.

 

When the health decreases under 30% by that measurement (although Hard Disk Sentinel and others might report as OK), I'd recommend replacing the drive. But that's probably years from now.

well i probably will soon anyway as its only 256gb and i have a 3080 which means i play alot of heavy demanding games that need loads of space

A month ago I replaced my Adata XPG 8200pro 256GB drive with a Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB. Cloned windows to it.
