So I have what might be an easy problem, or impossible; I'm amateur at best with networking. So, main computer has a direct, wired connection to modem. Wireless router also has direct connection to modem. How can I get my main computer to show up on the wireless system without connecting it (wired or wireless) to the router. What I am trying to do is stream VR titles from Steam to a Meta Quest 2 headset. Other, weaker comp that I have gotten working is connected wirelessly, so my VR setup is not an issue.

Short answer is that you probably can't, at least not easily.  Your modem is giving your router and pc one network address, while your router is setting up a second network for everything that connects to it.  You would need to be able to manually direct the Quest 2 headset to the IP of the main pc and Steam to the IP of the Quest headset.  Those are likely automatic processes built into the software, so the easy way would be to connect the pc to the router on the wired connection to get it to work.

Can I ask why you want your pc to not be connected to your router?

Connect your PC to your router…

If your modem has more then 1 port… it’s likely a modem/router combo which means you don’t even need your own router (having 2 puts you in double NAT, you can google this to understand more). Or, since most modem/routers are garbage, you can put it into bridge mode so it acts only as a modem, and then connect only the router to the modem and everything else to the router.

@Shadowwolf102 Distance. Don't want to move my modem, and just moved router to middle of house for better signal. Modem is a combo unit from AT&T, but turned off router function cause it sucks. Upgraded my router recently, so a move was just the next step. But don't want to run 2 50 ft cables to router. Would a 3 port switch work?

You need to plug your PC into your router. How you do that is up to you… yes you can put a switch between the PC and router, but I am not sure how that helps you from running wired, since the switch will then just need to plug into the router.

Also, if your modem/router is in modem only mode, it’s firewall features are turned off, which means currently your windows machine is exposed directly to the internet, which is a rather large security issue. Windows is not intended to be exposed to the internet. Again, the fix for this, is plug the PC into the router.

I would recommend getting one of these  - https://www.newegg.com/tp-link-tl-pa7017p-kit-up-to-1gbps/p/N82E16833704570?Description=ethernet powerline&cm_re=ethernet_powerline-_-33-704-570-_-Product

It'll let you use the electrical system in your house or apartment and keep your cord needs short.  I run a pair from my office to the living room to wire in my entertainment center to the network.  Plenty of options, just do a search for powerline in Amazon or Newegg and pick up what works for your situation.  Then plug the pc into one, and the router into the other.  That'll solve your problems.  🙂
