Advice on an under $1000 USD First build ever

Go to solution Solved by jan_flying,

Hi,

I learnt it the hard way, pre-built is no option!
With under 1000$ every dollar you can invest in good hardware helps.

I just wanted to get a feeling for US prices and put something similar in pc-partpicker. If you use the tool you'll get better replies 😉

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VXZYGL

Looks like under 1000€ can be a real good machine in the US.

Maybe double-check on the motherboard.

I wouldn't use HDDs anymore. Just install 1 TB nvme and look how long it lasts. You can easily add more later.

And the cheapest 6700XT should be a massive upgrade to the 6600...

PS: You can check my posts, I think my setup is almost available for your budget in the US. With the tweaks I described I would change next time.

Budget : Under $1000 USD

Country:  United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Really doing this for Need for Speed Unbound. As I don't have a PC or laptop for basic Resume building, MS Word type of things going for a two bird one stone kind of thing

Other details

I plan on gaming on my TV so no monitor. Also I would need a keyboard and mouse.

Would need windows 10 or better and antivirus things. Was planning on using a gray market like G2A for those items would be about $50 USD

$945 USD on Amazon for this build

CPU - AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler

1) You dont need 2Tb mechanical drive

2) Get a better PSU from a named brand from this list https://linustechtips.com/topic/1477009-psu-tier-list-rev-161a/#comment-15722094

3) You dont need a sepreate cooler the stock cooler will be fine for 5600

4)The other two addons aswell is just Astetics in this low price range going for astetics hit you so hard on perfomance

5) from the savings get a 6700/ 6600Xt gpu

6) You dont need to get a antivirus windows defender will do the job just fine if you are not storing mission critical data.

Or restructure the build like this

Not to add to the noise, but I thinkk this system is the most well-rounded out of all the parts lists posted:

  • The 5600 is more than fast enough for the 6700xt.  Anything more is just being extra.  Though you could do this parts list with a 13400f and a b760 board, you would be just a bit over budget though you would be setup for a GPU upgrade later if you so desired.
  • Aftermarket cooler to ensure max boost clocks and reduce noise.  The 5600 does not need much, so a basic one will acccomplish this easily, but it's definitely better than the stock cooler and will look nice with the case:
  • WiFi / Bluetooth B550 motherboard
  • 32GB of RAM so everything would be good and you'd never have to upgrade it (it's only like $20 more than 16GB).
  • 2TB Gen 4 NVME for fast load times in everything and plenty of space for huge games
  • 6700xt, you could run everything at a good framerate at ultra.
  • Good-looking case with good airflow and all of the RGB fans you need included.
  • High-end PSU with tones of headroom for boosting and could handle a GPU upgrade.
  • $50 under budget.

For $130 more, you could do a 13400f with a B760 motherboard and a bigger cooler. (you could also swap this cooler into the other parts list for $20 if you wanted, it is a better cooler)  This would game the same now but would be able to handle a faster GPU if you wanted to upgrade later:

A few points

  1. Kingston, PNY and Adata have been caught silently downgrading the quality of their SSDs, like Gateway Computers used to do to their computers. They didn't tell their customers or even change the packaging to show the decreased specs. Thus, I would not recommend any products from them.
  2. If you have a need for a lot of storage of data that you won't regularly use, like a back-up, an HDD is great because you can buy a lot of space for very little.  However, as your boot or secondary drive, it is not advisable because HDDs are very slow in comparison to SSDs. Get some good SSDs. If you're only doing word processing and one game, 1TB will be enough but, if you plan on adding a lot of other games, you'll need more space. Remember that the slowest core component of your build determines the speed of your computer..
  3. When choosing an SSD, pay attention to the transfer rates and the TBW (total bytes written), which gives you an idea, in terms of data, how long before it'll fail. Higher is better for both transferring and TBW.
  4. Anything that is for esthetics is not important on a $1,000 budget. Unless you find a deal where a quality RGB product is cheaper than a comparable plain product, it's not worth the cost. You can always add the decorations later. Heck, you can paint your case or turn it into replica of a building.
  5. Get the cheapest case you can find that supplies you with the space you require and has a good front panel for power, reset, USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt and sound. Conveniences to make it prettier and easier to build in are bells and whistles you don't need unless you're going to regularly be doing something inside your case. Cable management can be handled with twist ties or cable ties, with the important point being getting the cabling out of the airflow and away from very hot components. You don't need to see the inside of your PC for it to work so if the cheapest case is all metal that's fine. Pay attention to airflow and how many places for fans/AIO radiators that there are. If you need a DVD player or other device mounted in the case that is accessed from outside, you'll either have to choose a case that allows for that or only buy external devices.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
