I've been looking at anti virus and totalAV seemed a good option, is there any reason i shouldnt trust them or pick another AV? i want to get a 3rd party as windows defender has failed me before, but i'm also worried about getting a crappy AV that might just turn and sell my data or steal it and not protect me at all

Kaspersky, Bitdefender and Malwarebytes are good. All of them have a free version.

Keep in mind that they can also fail to protect you, every AV can.

What about totalAV tho? should i consider it? or should i simply not trust it

i understand all of them can fail me, it all comes down to my common sense and how safe i am, but can't hurt to have a more robust AV that is more likely to catch my mistakes

No AV is 100% accurate all the time. Full stop.

Pick your poison.

Personally, given enough ad-blockers and common sense (I don't download pirated software) I've not needed anything beyond Windows Defender.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Never heard of them. Googled it quickly, only negative reviews

It's hard to say which one is the best.

Windows Defender is actually in a really good space right now in terms of how powerful it is as an AV. You really don't need much else as long as you're keeping your computer up to date.

Im considering other options because, before i've run a 3rd party check and it found a few threats that windows defender missed (placed my trust on the wrong vpn extension), windows defender never picked it up, but malwarebytes ended up picking it up, im not expecting them to catch 100% of things, i know thats impossible, i mostly want something that just good, totalav offers a few features that i like including the vpn, im mostly worried if totalav is a trustworthy company and not gonna screw me in the back since a friend told me about them and ive never heard about them before this

Adwcleaner is good at detecting adware and junkware. Defender and also many other AVs don't detect them, because they specialize more on more dangerous threats.

Take a look at this -- https://www.gartner.com/reviews/market/endpoint-protection-platforms for endpoint protection. Granted this is based more out of businesses, you can still find home use products from a good chunk of the offerings.

In terms of VPNs, I'd look into protonVPN if you are at all interested in bundling up with their email and/or cloud storage bundles. Based out of Switzerland as well. One of my coworkers recommended this to me and it's been solid.

4.6 is pretty good.  I haven't had any issues with malwarebytes.  We use ESET for most clients at work with a smattering of Trend Micro.
