I'm planning for a home server build for my Youtube Channel, But i am so overhelmed by the knowledge of building home server, I did  watch the ltt home server tutorial and here's what i can come up with my home server

most of these component are just on the used market and i'm in Japan right now. My budget is about $1000 or 100,000 Yen

Case: https://paypayfleamarket.yahoo.co.jp/item/z190934290 (4800 Yen)

Mobo: https://item.fril.jp/99afe1acc8e67db31b2988555529954b (i7-6700K + Z170 + 16GB RAM)  20,000 Yen

HDD: Exos X16 x2 (found some on used market 30,000 Each = 60,000 Yen and planning to upgrade to 4-6 Drive)

Cooler: Stock (1,750 Yen)

PSU: Spare PSU corsair CX650W

Total: 86,550 Yen - About USD $800

My main note is that you need to be careful putting used storage in a NAS.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

So say that my build is good and the HDD is also healthy.

Which OS should I use? Unraid, TrueNAS or something else? I use the server for Plex and access file for editing for my Youtube Channel. Also I have Oculus Quest so i tend to watch TV shows, anime and movie through that server.

I would also want to revisit the cpu, mobo and ram but your buying used parts so I'm not really sure I'm qualified to comment on the value or performance of those components.

As for OS, I use TrueNAS. It was a bit of a pain to learn but there are alot of youtube tutorials on how to setup SMB shares for file access from a windows pc and Plex servers for media access by TVs, consoles ect.

Can't comment on the userfriendlyness of Unraid

For video editing, be aware that the Gigabit ethernet connection may be too slow. Network PHYs & switcher with 2.5 Gbps connectivity can be considered then.

As for the drives, it would be fine assumed these were retired ones from data centers; note however that they only cost 25% lower than brand-new ones (see prices on Akihabara), and you may take risks of data loss on used drives (since they generally have limited warranty and are more likely to fail). It depends on you nonetheless. Carefully check out the health stats of used drives if using them.

And for the OS, anything with Samba function can be considered; even Windows can do a great job here (except more memory-hungry).

I would recommend new drives if you can afford them. They are more reliable, and will last you longer.

I was thinking about it too, but on Amazon Japan these ironwolfs are extremely expensive. which is better for my use case? the Ironwolf or the Exos?189436177_Screenshot2023-01-13151844.thumb.png.32c79a9aec329d7af69026d72b961902.png1024318165_Screenshot2023-01-13151923.thumb.png.55ca3553089765b3332ce942aa4578ab.png1264260853_Screenshot2023-01-13152827.thumb.png.20697f1f84a3cef6d4cc1b3a55d0a51a.png

If I consider buying them new, should I buy the Ironwolf or the Exos?

I'm using 1Gbps network. Also I think the 2.5Gbps and above only apply to businesses.

So about the RAM, is 16GB is enough? or do i have to upgrade?

The Exos are a upgraded version of the ironwolf Pro, so I would do the Exos

First of all, the Ironwolf drives have been considered too expensive for home use. Although Exos drives have relatively better value, it might be even better for taking Toshiba, the Japanese vendor, into consideration; take their enterprise-grade drives with model prefix "MG", not "MN" or anything else.

Then actually, adoption of 2.5 Gbps networks has been widespread, with costs fairly acceptable by now; routers, switchers, PHYs bundled in motherboards, and among others. However it can be considered only when the Gigabit connection becomes insufficient.

The amount of RAM depends on which task you plan to throw on the server. You might make some video rendering/encoding, which require some computation power & fairly large amount of RAM. Then 16 GB would be a good start for you.

I took a look at the Toshiba drives with model prefix "MG" and it seems like it's more expensive than the Exos but i think I can manage, also, it might take a long time for me to get a 2.5gbps network because they don't support that kind of connection in my building so if I want to get that kind of connection, it'll cost me  fortune to get it done, so i think i'll stick with my 1Gbps connection for now.

About the RAM question, Does 16GB is enough for my use case? including, Editing video directly on the server, playing media file via PLex, Reading and Writing on server maybe at the same time? Or do I have to upgrade to 32GB?

It would not hurt to have 32GB of ram, but even though it might not be entirely necessary, I would definitely recommend it. Software will only require more ram in the future.

Well I didn't check out the prices from online shops, but found Toshiba MG series (16 TB) just around 40,000 yen with tax included on offline shops from Akihabara, as shown in this website.

Besides, as aforementioned, 16 GB of RAM would be a good start for you. The RAM can be upgraded anytime once it becomes insufficient.

That's good to know, once I got all the components i'll let you guys know , I'll update to this thread once that happening. Difinitely gonna make a video about this server so you guyes might enjoy me showing my amateur hours xD

As you and @Bersella AI said,I'll stick with 16gb for now. I'll upgrade it down the road later.
