7970 or 7950

Go to solution Solved by Jumper118,

Why are there so many MSI cards for sale barely found any other brands like XFX or saphire

there was a big problem with the twin frozr cards. the his, sapphire and asus were all ok. the gigabytes were voltage locked though

Looking for a GPU upgrade probably a 7970 or 7950 looked at some nvidia cards but they seem to be too expensive for the performance they give budget is around £200 or $340 can probably stretch for a bit more but yeah

Main system specs

955 Be oced to 3.6 no vcore increase

OCZ zs 550w 1x8pin and 1x6pin

MSI 560ti 448 core

2 hard drives

and a pretty crappy msi motherboard

TY in advance

The difference is about ~5fps. The 7950 is the same as the R9 280 and the 7970 is rebranded as the R9 280x. A GTX 770 is about inbetween I believe.

Radeon 7970s go for about £150 - £200 seems like a better price to performance ratio these are ebay prices btw

yes indeed.

the key to the 7950 was overclocking. it was just an overclocking monster and they were really really good value. at one point they were the top end card to go for. nothing even came close price/performance wise.

i don't think so, but msi are pretty rubbish with rma'ing cards anyway so i wouldn't worry about that.

EPIC PRICE!!!!

Aria is selling a Sapphire r9 280x for under £200 at the moment brand new of course. As far as I know it's the same card in essence as the 7970.

Try and find a 290 on sale. They are everywhere. If not, go with a 7950 as they have a ridiculous amount of OC room!

Early revisions of the Gigabyte models were unlocked. I had one.

You could also bios flash to unlock the others in 5 mins or less also.

Mines fine and it's an early revision with a reference 7970 PCB :)

OC with sliders max stock voltage:)

I'd also recommend steering clear of the XFX 7950/7970's, they looked good and were cheap but that was about it. You got what you paid for, barely adequate cooling and locked voltage and shitty binned chips meaning you couldn't overclock them at all, along with XFX's customer service generally being regarded as fairly crap.

there were a couple of revs with faulty diodes somewhere, but you could snap them off and the card would be fine. the only problem was that you would loose your warranty.

Odd, well I don't have any issues and hopefully none develop. :)
