B550 boards have been out for a long time already, and BIOS version 1004 is a very old one. Unfortunately ASUS's site doesn't seem to list release dates. However it's very unlikely the board will come with such an old version at this point (current is 2806). PCPP is simply being overly cautious.

~edit: Downloaded the .Zip and BIOS 1004 is from August 2020. Unless the board has been sitting on a shelf for two years, it'll have a newer BIOS version already. Otherwise, updating with BIOS flashback should be fairly easy, as long as you have another machine to download the file and a USB stick. No old CPU needed in this case.

Hi, Im building my first PC and started to get some of the parts. I currently have the CPU, GPU, and case. After I bought these parts, I decided to try a different mother board because the one I previously picked was way over priced after watching some videos. (Plus this one just looks cooler lol)

PC part picker is giving me this compatibility error and I was wondering if I would actually run into this issue?

Ive updated bios once before on my gaming laptop and was thinking it’d be something similar to that but my friend said I might need an older gen Ryzen CPU to update the board, and I dont have one.

you need to have a compatible CPU slotted in order to update the bios, unless the motherboard has support for bios flashback, which I think this board may support (not sure).

depending on how old the stock is, the board may be shipped with the updated bios already.
