CPU Fan Error!

Ah thank you for posting the manual, I just looked it up myself aswell. I don't understand why Corsair wants me to plug the AIO cable into the standard CPU_FAN header, when there is an AIO header where I could plug it in. Should I switch it up, or do I just keep the CPU Fan header control deactivated in the BIOS? There wouldn't be any real benefits or?

Corsair AIO kinda "special" like I mentioned.

If I understand their "mindset" correctly :
The cable you plugged into AIO header is just a Tachometer cable, to measure pump rotation and such.

The power for the pump & fans comes from SATA, the report & command for the fans & pump comes from iCUE through USB2 & Commander Core.

AIO Pump header is usually a fan header but with more current treshold but without capability to increase/decrease speed (runs at full speed all the time).

Hey I have seen similar threads, but they quite didn't my question that I have. I need some help, so I can understand what's the actual issue when it comes to that error message "CPU Fan Error!".

I built my PC ~ 1 year ago and experience the same error when booting my PC -> CPU Fan Error!

As a solution I disabled "CPU Fan Speed" in the BIOS and then my PC just booted normally. But I was never sure if that was the right solution, or if there needed something else to be done.

To make it easier to follow, I uploaded two screenshots from the manual of the mainboard (ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero Gaming).

I plugged the one cable my AIO has in the slot "AIO_PUMP) under No. 4. I guess that's the correct slot to plug the cable, am I right?

I don't have any other cables to plug in, so what do I with "CHA-FAN1" bottom left from the CPU (No. 4) and "CPU_OPT" + "CPU_FAN" top right from the CPU (No. 4).

For me, it was the only logical thing to leave them as they are because I don't have any cables left. It was also logical for me to plug my AIO into "AIO_PUMP". So I don't quite understand why the "CPU Fan Error!" occurs and my PC doesn't boot unless I deactivate the option "CPU Fan Speed".

--- --- ---

Off topic:
Can I set a color for my RGB fans without using the Corsair software? I think I have maybe a defective RGB Fan Hub from Corsair which causes issues and recently even caused my CPU to overheat. After I disabled the software my CPU temps and the RPM of the fans got stable again. I uninstalled the software and don't want to have rainbow lights in my PC distracting me. Just a decent static color, of turn it off completly.

---

Temps:

One additional question regarding temps. You can see in my screenshot (Armoury crate), that my idle temps on the CPU are around 50°C and the CPU Package around 60°C. Isn't that a little bit high for an AIO (Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX)? I have currently 5 Corsair LL120 RGB LED fans installed in the case and I plan to add the 6th fan the next time I will make some tests on my PC, which will be after I buy a new graphics cards (RTX 4080) and I am a little bit worried that the temps then will get even higher, when the air flow might get worse with a bigger graphics card, but I know my current 1080 Ti can get up to 100°C, so a newer graphics card can maybe even help.

Can I get better temps when I would undervolt my CPU with the Curve Optimizer?

After updating my BIOS my changes to PBO and Curve Optimizer were resettet. I experienced issues after curve optimizing. I got regularly blue screens, when I did it manually only by a few points I think I didn't experience that issues. Now I have them both disabled to see if I will get any firther blue screens.

After building the PC I ran Memtest86 and Windows Memory Diagnostic and got no issues, so I think my RAM is OK. I think my CPU might have some issues with OC/PBO/Curve Optimizing.

All in all, I'm writing all of this out of my frustration after building a new PC with new components (fairly new at the time) and having problems. My old i7700K (5 year old PC) didn't stress me that much.

I alter the bios to suit my build and config, so I am never bothered what fan headers are populated and for what reason, I have never experienced any issues, any that through up errors like no cpu fan just get disabled as you did.

Temps seem high is your pump running at ok speeds in bios?

Hi.. i havn't run anything in the CPU header since i got my first AIO.. now i'm running custom loop with a water temp sensor i run the fans off..

the CPU fan will adjust fans to CPU temp and go up and down alot... easy max every 5 minutes some task starts up..

use the AIO socket for your AIO pump.. and case fan 1 for your fans.. if you have a  temp sensor... you can use it. my board came with one i could put somewhere. but i'm using a threaded so it's integrated with my waterloop directly.

since armory crate is utter crap i've set my fans up in bios...

When I'm correct the AIO runs always at 100% and in my case that's also true. My AIO (with 3 fans) runs on about ~2630 RPM.

That's also what I remembered and I thought to myself it can't be possibly correct when I can connect to the AIO slot. Here's waht the manual says:
> Connect pump 24-pin cable to your Commander CORE (figure 1).
> Connect pump tach cable to the CPU_FAN header on your motherboard (figure 2).
> Connect each fan to the Commander CORE (figure3)
> Connect each fan RGB lead to the Commander CORE (figure 3)

So you are right. At the time I didn't want to plug it into the CPU_FAN because I read, that the AIO slot guarantees that the AIO will run at 100% at all times, which how they are supposed to run. So should I switch it up then?

I ordered a new thermal paste (a higher quality one) and will apply some new thermal paste. Maybe my layer of thermal paste was applied a little bit too thick or it's just lower quality. But I know I was cautious the last time I applied thermal paste, so my hopes aren't that big. My airflow isn't probably the best (but for certain not the worst, because the case should be at least decent at it) and I could fit one extra fan in the back side of the PC.

Sadly the Corsair AIO can't go much higher. Yours seem to be extremly fast. How loud are your fans then?

Normal speed for a D5 pump i think.

right now they run at 1100 rpm.. so not realy loud.. 5 ek vardar x3m 120 fans. one fractal 120, and one fractal 140.  not much louder at 1800.. they max out at 2200. that keeps it status quo cooling a 9900k and two 2080ti's. set by temp probe to water temp... fans will max out at 50C.. but stops at 45C when playing rdr2 1440p 240hz. max settings in geforce experience.
