Is water cooling worth it? https://dk.pcpartpicker.com/list/T27TTn

Hello everybody! These recent days I've decided upon getting myself a new PC, but I have a slight issue - or a question rather.

It's about cooling. Because I've landed on a CPU and GPU configuration:

Intel i7-12700KF

ASUS TUF RTX 3070 Ti

(if you have good alternatives, I'll gladly take some suggestions)

As they're quite powerful components, I'm wondering if heat might become an issue. For cooling, I've the be quiet! pure rock 2 (if that tells you something) built into the case attached in the image below. This will probably not give you a full view of the thermal performance - but it might give you an idea as to if it has bad air flow and might experience thermal issues. As I have no idea myself, I've been wondering if water cooling is a viable option. I usually play lesser GPU heavy games (like CS:GO), but with the purchase of a better, GPU, I'm planning on exploring more graphics intensive games. What impact do you all think water cooling might have on my system, and for which components might it be necessary (if any)? And is it even worth it for that extra thermal performance?

Cheers, everyone! And merry christmas 🙂

You'll want a different case. This one wants to do bottom to top airflow but doesnt actually have the space for it so it turns into an extreme hotbox

Alright cheers! Do you mind reviewing some options if I send you some?

Send away, but if the NR200 is part of the list, it's a really good little case.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Danish? I also missed in my first post that you've got MATX cases and not ITX. I'm not a huge fan of any of them really, but I tend to put airflow before looks.

I saw that Proshop has the Pop Air midtower at 794 DK. I use the full size version of the case. Great case, great airflow, but it's 20 DK higher than anything anything you've shown.

The Lian Cool 205m is another good alternative and well within your budget. The P300A is another good option.

FWIW on that Pop air, I'm using the XL, so 2 sizes above the one I linked. It does amazing for airflow and has quickly became a top suggestion of mine.

Spoiler

There's before and after the 4090. With no fans on the top 280mm rad I still couldn't get the 6800xt or the 12900k to thermal throttle. With the 4090, the hottest I've really seen is 79C on it's air cooler. With just 3 intake fans. The case really impressed me.

(The more I link those pictures the more I see I have to fix with my runs. The waterblock finally showed up for the 4090 so they can be fixed)

That's actually really cool, also cool PC! I'm definitely not going to buy a 4090 so I might be alright with the smaller version - but the case sounds really impressive. Might have to pick that one up then. Cheers man!

If you've got extra time at one point, I could use some help making a PC on https://dk.pcpartpicker.com (Danish version w/ Danish prices). My budget is around 13000 DKK. I've no idea as to what fans are good and in general just how to save a buck or two - the builds I'm coming up with are about the same price and performance as if I got one built by a PC building company (which I'm assuming does not offer the best prices). Any advice here would also be appreciated!

This is obviously time consuming, but if you would like to help on some part suggestions, I'd love to get some help!

My mind is jumping all over the place with builds and which way to go. Do you want mATX in a smaller case like the 205M or ATX in a larger case like the P300? Any cases in particular you like? Also, that Bequiet Pure rock 2, do you already have that, or do you need to find a cooler yet?

Honestly, I'd prefer a larger case (ATX). This is my first ever custom PC-build and I do not have any experience - so I'm assuming the larger case might make it easier for a beginner like me! Would love for the components on the inside to be visible for some showoff action.

And in regards to the bequiet pure rock 2, I do not have that one unfortunately. I do not have any components, so starting completely from scratch!

PCPP doesn't like to search other Scandanavian stores sometimes and just gets angry.

https://www.proshop.dk/Grafikkort/ASUS-GeForce-RTX-3070-Ti-TUF-OC-V2-8GB-GDDR6X-RAM-Grafikkort/3122709 Is actually cheaper than the Zotac I put in the list by 200 DK.

The motherboard is the only place I wish I had more budget. However, if you don't need the extra PCIE slots and are fine with not having the motherboard hang all the way down to the case, this is a better board overall.

https://www.proshop.dk/Bundkort/ASUS-PRIME-B660M-A-WIFI-D4-Bundkort-Intel-B660-Intel-LGA1700-socket-DDR4-RAM-Micro-ATX/3024277

The Arctic fans would replace the rear case fan that comes with the P300a and fill the top and two front fan slots. If you don't want RGB fans you can save another 200 DK or so.

Swapping the GPU for that ASUS that is on sale, and the motherboard for the B660m Asus would put you right at your budget. Out of curiosity, what prebuilt were you looking at? I want to see how it ended up comparing.

Hey! That looks really good, thank you ever so much. In regards to the motherboard, do I need the extra PCIe slots? What importance might they bring for a gamer?

Also, here’s a screenshot of the specs of the build from the PC building company:

There are quite a few similarities, actually. How well do you think your custom build compares to the one of the pc building site?

They only help if you want to plug other stuff in later on. Those motherboards have built in WiFi, so you won't need a WiFi card. They have good LAN chips, so you won't need one of those unless you want to step up to something stupid overkill later on.

Most people really just end up with a graphics card plugged into them. There are people who use PCIE capture cards, but that ASUS prime has enough ports to handle that. Really with going to the Asus prime, you lose out on 1 PCIE slot and not much else.

Finally got my butt kicked in the differences between the broken Norwegian I speak and Danish. I didn't think motherboard would be that different and had to look it up 😉

Their build isn't bad at all. The big differences I see are that you have a K instead of a KF with my build which does have integrated graphics. That TXm power supply is another really good power supply. The case is another one of those that look really good, but I wish it had more airflow coming from the front and not a solid panel.

Really, if you just want to buy a computer and not have to build one it's not a bad choice.

Alright, sick! And yeah, honestly most Danish people just refer to it as 'motherboard' because it sounds way better :-))

I just don't get how PC building companies can get that competitive with their pricing compared to buying the parts individually! I've looked at other PC building companies and their pricing isn't as competitive - and I even know the company is legit because I have a PC from them myself. Maybe the parts are too expensive to buy individually here in Denmark (w/o buying in bulk for cheaper), because it's really counterintuitive that the PC building companies aren't substantially more expensive?

From what I've seen in Norway, it's about the same there where prices are really competitive. I really would think it has a lot to do with buying in bulk and shipping costs of that. Parts in general are a lot more expensive. A 5600x at proshop is almost $50 usd more than buying here. That comes down to VAT and all that too though. Our taxes on sales are a lot less. Different markets do different things.

There could also be a higher ratio of people buying computers to people building their own there which means the companies can take a smaller profit on each one and make the same amount or more.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

Yeah I guess you have to count that as well. 25% VAT on almost everything here :-((
