PSU Pandemonium

Go to solution Solved by IKEA Cherry Chair,

Update on this, was able to get a new PSU into my PC, it took a few hours but I did!

I feel proud of myself, this is the first piece of hardware work I've actually done! it's been working for a couple days, so I'd say it's sound!

Thank you all so much!

So, let's say hypothetically I get a new PC, and hypothetically, I find out that the PSU is Apevia which is a brand known for being literally dangerous for components. How can I use my PC with least risk of having my computer spark out before I get the PSU replaced in the near future?

Please help

Use it as a display piece, without powering it on.

As someone with firsthand experience with an Apevia concealed explosive "power supply" taking a motherboard with it, I would be hesitant personally.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

agree, not using it is the safest way. If you know your PSU is known to be bad and choose to turn it on youre really just choosing to roll the dice. It sucks to have a fully built PC staring at you minus a single part like that, but youll be much more upset when you used to have a brand new PC and now you have a pile of e-waste.

Noted

I just won't use it until I can get it to best buy or smth to get it replaced

Already got a Corsair 1kw to replace it, still boxed, so that's covered

Yeah

It's like pulling a lever, with a 90% chance to get good frames, and a 10% to, well,

If you already have a replacement, why wait to take it in and pay someone to replace it? Replacing a PSU is easy.

I don't trust myself to replace parts that aren't more of a pull-out pop-in, i don't want to fuck anything up

I can't reuse the old cables?

No because cables from different psus are usually incompatible (on the psu side of the cable), but every psu should come with its own cables so its not an issue.

The psu isnt too difficult its just annoying and takes a little bit of time, as long as you plug everything into the right connectors it cant break anything and will work just fine.

What case do you have?

Specifically named the:

"CyberPowerPC FURION Mid-Tower Gaming Case w/ front/Top & Both Side Tempered Glass + 6X Dual Light Loop 120mm RGB Fans & Controller"

That doesn't sound too bad, all I'm worried about now is sizing

Update, after some research it sounds like the Corsair 1KW PSU, the one I'm using to replace the Moloto- I mean Apevia PSU, will fit

This may work out

Alright, I got the case opened up, I see GPU, CPU, and motherboard needs to be unplugged. There's something else below in the second pic but it's difficult for me to trace to anything.

Anything I missed that I need to unplug?

Hard to tell with the pics, but the cables below may just be tucked in out of the way and not going to anything or may be going to a drive. Just unplug the three you see, unscrew the PSU, and gently remove it and the cables. If you find something else plugged in, note it and unplug it. Once everything is removed, reverse order with the new PSU. Make sure PSU is unplugged first, of course.
