Updating GPU vs new build

Hi everyone. 

 

I am currently running an i7 8700k, 32GB ram, GTX1080, running games at 1440p, ideally 144hz when i can. 

 

I am looking at upgrading the current build with an 6700xt ($599AUD). 

Is this current build going to utilize this card, or is it too old, and should I do a full build?

Buy the card. see if you are happy with your performance. 

If and only if you are still unhappy should you consider a new build.
The question you need to ask is if the CPU is meeting your needs. Benchmarks like Tomb Raider will tell you when CPU binds happen.

I'd expect a bit of bottleneck on CPU intensive games such as CP2077, Spider-man Remastered/MM, etc. Others maybe no bottleneck, if there is, maybe just a bit.

8700K is a bit slower than 12100 now, so most likely it will be okay, but I wouldn't expect too much.

So, my suggestion would be, keep the 8700K, OC it as much as you can (if you haven't), save the money for future upgrade.

Just get a GPU for now. You can the get a feel on if the pc feels quick enough for your taste or if it feels sluggish. 

I upgraded a gtx 960 + i5 4690 system. First I got a 3060 which meant heaven to difference in Rdr2 and such, going from 27 fps to 60+, but the system still felt a bit sluggish in cpu heavy games, especially minecraft, so after another 8 months I ponyied out for a mobo/cpu upgrade. 

 

That said, the 8700k should be a very good deal faster than my old 4690k,and you are playing 1440p, so that also puts more strain on the GPU
