Hello All,

I am having second guesses on my build, I have been keeping an eye out on pricing and the new releases of the year. My second guessing comes to should I go AMD or Intel. Intel seems to provide the best current performance for gaming, but with no upgrade path, past 13th gen. AMD having just started with AM5 has an upgrade path built in, and the upcoming V-Cache as well.

I would be looking at either the 12600K (13600K if I can find it at a good price), or the 7600X.

Is there a good school of thought on this?

Thanks.

Strictly for gaming, the 7600X is a faster CPU on average. You can take a look at this 54-game benchmark from Hardware Unboxed:

As for the platform longevity, you can be sure that AM5 is going to have a longer lifespan than Intel's socket. The 3D V-Cache CPUs will also bring a lot more gaming performance to the table in terms of upgrading the 7600X in the future.
The only downside is the price of the 7600X, as it's not the best value apparently especially considering the older 5800X3D which works in much cheaper motherboards and with much cheaper DDR4 memory.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

In term of performance, you will see them punching back and forth with every release.

If you're concern with upgrade path, go with ryzen, at least 3 generation or 5 gen if we're lucky.

Not only the v-cached version, they will release the cheaper non-x, since they are not competitive with intel in terms of price.

For intel, you're getting more cores for the same class / price point, useful if you're using it other than gaming.

There will be very minor usage for anything other than gaming. Just maybe some minor word processing stuff, nothing to crazy at all.

I was thinking the Ryzen also, that's where I was leaning anyway. Simply because of longevity of upgradeability. I would rather upgrade the CPU and Graphics card in a few years and not have to worry about the rest of it. Preferably anyway.

With that in mind, would it be smarter to go for an X670/X670E to get more life out of the MB as well?

No, they're pretty overpriced when b650 boards will work just fine sine am5 boards' vrms are pretty overbuilt.

This would be a fine option

Though pretty much Any board would be fine with a 7600x on it

I thought B650 had overclocking locked down, or limited? I could be very wrong with that though.

I might bump up to the 7700X also, unsure on that one yet.

but with no upgrade path,

Not a good criteria. None of us have any idea what will be available when you will be wanting to upgrade the CPU. It is far more likely that you will find a new CPU & motherboard much more attractive than what will be compatible with any motherboard purchased today. And unless you plan to get a new system within two years, AMD has offered no assurance of AM5 being used past 2025.

If you can, wait for the product announcements expected in January. Use the total of motherboard, CPU, and CPU cooler pricing to decided since gaming performance is so close.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
