GPU fluctuating. Frequent but not consistent stuttering at idle.

Flatopia

new computer I just built. Im worried the gpu is breaking, and I got it a couple months ago as I bought the parts staggered from each other, so I’m worried I’m up a creek without a paddle.

on boot, typically, the computer is stuttery. The mouse will be laggy, and things will just hitch extremely frequently. Sometimes it’s incredibly bad, and rarely theres none at all, which keeps tricking me into thinking the problem is solved.

In task manager, when its stuttery, the gpu usage percentage is going nuts. 3% to 64% to 20% and all around extremely fast. Even when it bounces around on the lower end the stuttering is the same.

Checking open hardware and the gpu isnt getting hot in this time at all, its totally fine. However, it will sometimes if its stuttering really bad just shut the computer off, which *sounds* like overheating. Using the extremely scientific method of holding my hand near the gpu, its not warm at all when this happens.

Please, I’m begging. I’ve tried updating drivers, clean install, swapping cables, ensuring everything is seated properly, reseating anyways, and just generally praying. No matter what, the only thing that works is just shutting down and booting up my computer until it gets lucky and doesn’t stutter, which can take actual hours.

SPECS: XFX speedster merc13 amd radeon 6700xt

AMD Ryzen 9 7900x

Corsair RMx RM850x 850w

Strange.

If left at it's own device for a while idling will it still be stuttery when you return? While stuttery are you able to open task manager and see if something is chewing away at system resources? Also it is still a clean install? You didn't install things yet? What is it like booting in safe mode, same or better?

Try make a memtest bootable USB and see if that spits out any memory issues. Run atleast 1 pass or two if you can.

It does this while idle, and in fact often gets worse or eventually just shuts down. Its not overheating I’m extremely paranoid about heat. In task manager it is just randomly bouncing on system and a few other processes from windows. It is a new install, although I downloaded a game and discord to test performance and communicate with friends for help.

I have not tried safe mode yet, I will in the morning. I just have been busy trying to see if anything would fix it before trying that, since I don't know what I would do assuming it works in safe mode.

And im sorry, a memtest? I don’t know exactly what that is, but my ram seems to be working great. Sorry for not knowing

Memtest: https://memtest.org/ will test your memory for issues.

Try this first though. May not solve anything but worth a try.

Check your manual to see how to clear CMOS/RTC and do it. Then boot the PC and let memory train.

Open CMD as admin (search start menu for cmd and choose run as administrator).

Run command

chkdsk c: /f /r

Reboot and see if it will fix anything.

When back open CMD like before and this time run

sfc /scannow

If it reports that it fixed something then reboot. If it didn't fix anything or you rebooted open CMD once more the same way and run these commands. If they fix anything reboot again.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanHealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Anything better at all?

I will give results in the morning.

1St - disable the Ultra Low Power State ULPS. I'd recommend using MSI Afterburner, not the regedit method.

2nd - make sure you have the latest chipset drivers downloaded from AMD.

3rd - use the latest Bios and GPU drtivers.

At work, so I will try the ULPS when I get home. I never heard of this, is it common for it to interact with the GPU like this?

i also have the latest chipset, Bios, and drivers.

I have tried a memory test, no dice. I have tried the cmd options provided here

No dice.

i have actually then disabled ulps, which has not helped. I have changed power connections to the gpu with no dice.

In terms of how it’s performing. Coming back from work, it ran smooth on the first boot but every time since it seemingly gets worse and now is so bad I cannot navigate the bios, which is currently where I’m at. In the limited time I could look in the bios I could not find a safe mode option which is something ive never seen a bios lack so I might just not be able to find it, I suppose. Did confirm everything was up to date again, which they are.

Any further advice would be appreciated. I’m really scared the gpu is broken, as I genuinely cannot afford another.

After further testing with a friends system, onboard graphics, and another older card

Unfortunately it seems as if the card was broken. Checking manufacturer for an RMA.

lesson to learn is that if you’re able, to test parts as they come in if you aren’t ordering all of them at once to avoid this. Thanks to all who helped.
