Internet Speed Different Between Devices

I have recently moved and have had to buy a WIFI card for my PC as I cannot run an ethernet cable from the modem to my PC. My download speed is 100mbs.

When I test my internet speed via my phone or tablet on any speed testing site is get well above the 100mbs. But when I test the speed from my PC it maxed out at 12mbs for one site and well above 100mbs on others. Steam and Origin download games at around 10mbs. I am not sure what to trust when determining what speed my internet is for my PC. Does anyone know what could be causing the discrepancy?

Distance to access point, line of sight and obstructions, quality and transmission power of both the card and access point... lots of variables can be causing this.

I put my phone and tablet in the same place as the wifi card when testing and they still get higher speeds than the PC.

Intel WIFI 6 AX200.

I should note that every speed test site shows speeds above 100mbs except one and downloading games.

There's a huge difference between MB/s (megabytes per second) and mbps (megabits per second). One megabyte is eight megabits. "mbs" isn't really an abbreviation of anything so I'm confused on what you mean.

 

Steam reports its download speeds in MB/s, and so 10MB/s would translate to about 80mbps, which is the measurement your ISP uses when measuring internet speed. That is normal. Origin does the same if memory serves.

 

Whatever test sites you are using, if they are anything other than the Google built-in test or speedtest.net, I wouldn't use it. Though really what matters and will be most accurate is your speed in the real world, and if it is actually 10MB/s in Steam, then that is perfectly normal if you pay for 100mbps.

a great many ISPs will detect when you are running a speed test and open the throttle to make it look like your connection is better than it actually is.

As to the slow DL under steam...I've seen where it starts slow and ramps up as more of the game is being downloaded.

Beyond that, troubleshooting wifi speeds is always a trick and you really can't compare with phones/tablets as that's not a 1-to-1 comp.

Sorry for the incorrect terms lol I am not knowledgeable when it comes to internet speeds and terms. 

 

The built in Google test is showing 10mbps on my PC but +100mbps on my phone or tablet even when they are all next to each other. Speedtest.net shows +100mbps on my PC and phone. I am just confused about the difference between them.

 

The Steam and Origin download makes sense, thank you for explaining that.
