Should I upgrade or replace?

Go to solution Solved by MetroP,

Get an FX 6350 or an FX 6300 and overclock it.

Both are much faster than the top end APU which is the A10 7850k.

I have a Gigabyte 970A-D3 board that I bought for mining and a R9 270x, but now I'm using it as an actual desktop. The CPU is a old AMD tricore. Should I buy a AMD FX 6300 for this machine or should I scrap the board and CPU and get a FM2 board with a better processor.

The case isn't limiting anything. It's a Cooler Master HAF XB monster sized case. I can use virtually ANY piece of hardware in this beast of a case.

New CPU.

That's the thing, I was thinking "Why not get a FM2 board so I can use A8's?". I don't want to make the investment right now though as I might go Intel.

I need a USB3 card to use the case's USB 3 slots, and I need to get more ram as well. Who can truly live with just 8gb of ram...

And fx is better than a8 apu's when you have a GPU...

Get a nice gigabyte am3+ board and an fx 6300/8---

You can get an FX-6300 and have as good (if not better) CPU performance than an A10, and have a GPU that's as good (or better) than an A10.

I'm using the Gigabyte 970A-D3, it gets the job done... I have my R9 270x running solo for now, probably going to go crossfire once I get a better motherboard.

Any suggestions for a budget AM3+ FX supported motherboard?

I'm planing on replacing the CPU cooler with a better one as right now I'm running stock.

I have had both of the above mentioned mb GB one I RMA'ed because I thought it was broken, it really wasn't, and I got the MSI. The gigabyte one looks better, even though it's matx in atx case

I would recommend the gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 REV. 4 with a AMD FX8350, on newegg I was able to get a nice bundle with them.

Just use the board you have now and wack a FX6300 or FX8320 in there and a good aftermarket cooler. then in a few months or so when you can afford to it should be cheap enough to get the exact same graphics card and go crossfire, then it should last a few years until the next gen stuff comes out.

got to love Asus components
