Hi everyone,
a friend of mine has following setup:
  B250M PRO-VDH (MS-7A70)  - 1151 motherboard
Intel i5-7600k - there are no reasonable upgrades for the motherboard
  RTX 3060
  40 GB RAM:
    2x16GB DDR4 3200MHz

    1x8GB DDR4 2400MHz

He uses it mainly for gaming and streaming, mostly heavily modded Minecraft. Now he wants to upgrade his CPU to play Cyberpunk 2077 and asked me if he should get Ryzen 9 7950X for 656 € (VAT included). He wants to upgrade his CPU because he takes a big performance hit when streaming.

1) I would suggest getting R7 7700X (444€) or even R5 7600 if they want to go with AMD as 7950X sounds like a huge overkill.
2) Is it even worth going AMD right now with AM5 motherboard prices? Would you upgrade to something else disregarding his wish for AMD?
3) How does RTX 3060 handle CP2077 at 1080p? Should I suggest a GPU upgrade?
4) He says he gets occasional BSODs, especially after the PC has been running for some time and a lot of applications are running. Could the mismatching 8GB RAM module be the cause? I suggested to remove it and use the PC like that for a while to see if it removes the issue.

Thanks all for help

What are the full specs?

Psu model and make please.

Also for streaming id just get a 12600k or 13600k. They will be using the 3060 for nvenc anyway so really you just want a cpu that can play the game properly. You can have the board + cpu + cooler for the pricr of a 7700x possibly and thry wont notice a single difference.

Am5 is ABSOLUTLY NOT WORTH IT RN. So like hard skip it. Reuse the 32gb of ddr4 and leave that slow 2400mhz stick out of it that is gonna create a big performance hit on the new cpu if left in.

Oh and 3060 is finr for cb 2077 at 1080p 60 no problem

With his GPU? Even 5600x or 12400 should suffice, more than that, his CPU will be wasted.

3060 should do decently at 1080p, just don't expect RT high without DLSS.

AM5 is a no go, value wise 13th gen beats it, especially 13600K.

Occassionaly visits the forum when I have nothing to do at work.

OK he'll probably get 13600k. Would you recommend a motherboard? Should he go for a Z790 mobo?

Also apparently he's been using "400W - be quiet! System Power 8". That's not even enough for his current setup I think.

Id just get a cheap z690 ddr4 with cpu less bios flashback far cheaper and you arent missing out on anything usefull.

That psu is decent and is enough for the current setup as the 3060 doesnt really spike. That pc wont consume 400w under load. With a 13600k however id really replace it for a higher quality unit.
