Good day,

I'm currently using a Quadro K4000 on my r7 1700x system and I'm planning to do a bit of an upgrade but i'm on a budget coz the wife just gave birth and I recently lost my job.

I'm eyeing on those used rx580/90s in the FB marketplace. Would they make a sensible upgrade? I'm from the Philippines so I have limited options for my current budget. I won't be selling my old card though coz I'm planning to use it for my Old man's PC.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You'd be getting around 3-4x the performance in GPU bound situations assuming TechPowerUp's relative performance numbers are accurate. You do also need to consider that the 580/590 require a lot more power than the K4000 does. I'd recommend having at least a 500W PSU since you're pairing it with a 1700X. The PSU also needs to have an 8-pin (6+2) PCIe power connector.

I wouldn't trust used Polaris cards, most of them are fried from mining 24/7 for years, if they're cheap suspect, they might have damaged memory chips or a busted GPU that artifacts when you revert the VBIOS to the original.

Baby stuff have been sorted out... LMAO..

Yep. They're suspiciously dirt cheap. Anthing from team green though?

is there a reason you're upgrading?

Thanks man! How about something from green?

In Germany where i life, most of the cards from team green are just terrible value compared to AMD... i wouldt recommend anything less than a used 1070 when you want to be futureproof...

Nvidia's prices are worse in basically every region. Looking right now on PCPartPicker for the Philippines, you can get an RX 6600 for a fair bit less than a GTX 1660 Super or RTX 3050.

I'm using a 700w corsair 80+gold so power is no issue for me. Letnme know if you have recommendations from the other side (nV)

The equivalent card for Nvidia (in terms of performance) is either the GTX 1060 6GB or GTX 1650 Super. The GTX 1650 Super only has 4GB of VRAM, so that's not ideal in 2022. If you can find a used GTX 1060 6GB (not the 3GB version) then that could be a good option. A GTX 1070, 1070 Ti, or 1660, 1660 Super, 1660 Ti, would be better than even the RX 590, but I'm guessing they'd be a lot more expensive.

Got it. Thanks for the info. I really couldn't think of anything from nV until now

Sorry, follow up question though, I found a 1070 (non-Ti) 8GB Founders Ed around my area for a tad more than the rx590. Should I choose this instead?

There's also this titan x 12GB around the same price. Lol. Now I'm confused.

The 1070 is faster than the RX 590, so if the price is good for you, then it would be a good choice.

a tiny bit slower (like 5%) but more VRAM. I’d get the 1070 tbh

Thanks for the recommendation.

What benefits do I get with more VRAM though. Back in the day I thought it was just to support higher resolutions ( geforce 5500 days... Lol) now I'm not so sure anymore with all the AI compute hapening on GPUs.

Higher detail/res textures. However it’s not that big a deal now for MOST games. On a 1070, settings are not gonna exhaust 8gb vram, but maybe on a more powerful GPU like a 3070 you would run out of vram sometimes
