Replacement card

scottiecb19

Apologies for asking a question that has probably been answered to a greater extent, but....

My 1080 has just given up on me, so I'm looking for a replacement card. My primary monitor is a 34" 1440p ultrawide (which I used for gaming), but I have a second 28" 4k monitor which I tend to watch vids/surf on.

I can't justify a top of the range card, but I do want something that delivers high quality gaming (rtx and high-ultra settings are preferable), though I wouldn't describe myself an avid gamer so high frame rates aren't so important, just want it playable on that front. I mainly play games such as Cyberpunk, Far Cry, GTA5, FIFA, Flight Sim, and mostly do it offline so no competitive stuff.

Obviously the new cards from AMD and Nvidia are being released/in the offing, but the 30 series still seem quite able, and in the UK shops like CEX offer 2yr warranties with used cards, 3070's being £400-£500, 3070ti's are £500-£600 and 3080's @ £600+.

Current rig is a 3900x on a MSI Meg Ace, with 32gb RAM and a 600W psu (which could be upgraded I guess).

So thoughts are (and I appreciate a prediction is needed on the price of the unannounced cards) wait for a lower priced current gen AMD/Nvida card or pull the trigger on a currently available 30 series?

Thanks for the help all. Take care.

Personally, I really love Nvidia's software(GeForce Experience) and drivers. For that reason alone, I typically advocate for Nvidia cards over most other options for any serious workloads.

With that said, I will not recommend buying Nvidia's 40-series just due to the price versus the performance increase. An RTX 3070 or 3080 will still be plenty usable for years to come.

3070 won't require a osu change.  3080 will.

3070 is a good 1440 UW card, as is the 6800xt but don't think you can run it on 600w?  Someone can chime in.

3070 should do fine on 600W typically, but in this case, OP may be pushing it a little with that 3900X

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy to change the PSU if necessary, there are plenty on the second hand market (known names) going for a good price. I've since learned in the UK that EVGA honour their limited warranties for second hand cards (no-one else seems to), so that may put eBay and other such sites back in play for those cards. I'd prefer something with a warranty as a safety net.
