Hello. I've just moved into a house that has two apartments, i live upstairs and someone else lives downstairs. There's only 1 router that is located in the downstairs apartment. The wifi range/speed is alright i suppose but i'd like my own router and to have the ability to use ethernet cables. Is it even possible to add a second router on the same network? If so, how?

Yes it is possible but I would connect both with ethernet. The second router will be configured as an access point so you will share the same network but with a stronger signal. If you want to have your own network, you can do that as well but it would be best to plug your router into the modem directly, provided the modem has more than one physical port. Another solution could be to use powerline but that depends on the wiring in your home, might work, might not, or not so well.

Yes this is probably what i meant. Is it as easy as just plugging a second router into the modem if it has the ports for it?

Yes it is. Make sure the other end is plugged into the WAN port on your router, if it has one.

You could also use one router such as a pfsense box that has multiple lan ports that you can isolate so your and your neighbors networks are separate.

You can even set bandwidth rules so neither apartment can hog all the bandwidth.

Very few modems have multiple ports.
