And now we know the issue is your PC.

Do you have any software that could affect the ethernet, like some Internet optimization tools (cFos, NetLimiter, ...)?

Were there any power outages recently, thunderstorms etc?

i dont think i have any software for networking. also no power issues recently.

Can you boot a live Linux (like Ubuntu) and check if the Ethernet speeds are OK when using it?

so I got Ubuntu running off a usb stick. Do I need to install any drivers for it to run at 1Gbps? Currently just booting it up and checking the settings it is saying 100Mbps.

It's the computer.

Does everything else work? If yes, you might need to get a network adapter.

if i plug them into each other then they both say 100mbps

Have you tried a new ethernet cable (Cat5e or better)? Cable defects can have different effects on performance from one ethernet adapter to another.

the cable to my switch was crimped by my dad i dont know how he did it but the cable to my computer is one supplied by Virgin

How is the switch involved in this? Do all ports in the network chain support 1Gbps?

Also, from the command prompt, run the following command and tell us what is shows under ‘Receive Window Auto Tuning Level’:

netsh interface tcp show global

If it’s disabled, enable it and test after reboot…

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

If it’s enabled, disable it and test after reboot…

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

I have tried at least 3 cables all cat 6.

the switch is the only break in the cable from my router to my pc

so i ran the command propt and it was enabled. So i disabled it and rebooted my pc and now i am getting 250mbps and when i check control panel it says 1Gbps now. What did that command do?

Make sure your network card isn't hard coded to use a 100 meg connection. It should be set to "Auto Negotiation".

If that's not it, check the physical network connector on your PC. 10/100 Ethernet only needs two pairs of conductors in the cable, but Gigabit needs all four. If some of the pins are shorted or marginal, it might be falling back to 100 meg just to make sure you have a stable connection.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

i know my ports are not coded to only use 100mbps as i checked this the other day and they both said auto negotiation. i have checked both ports and they look to be fine and undamaged and after running the command line Falcon1986 gave me earlier i am now getting the correct speed. i now want to know what exactly that command line did and what it changed
