Budget (including currency): lets say 2000€, but I can be flexible

Country: Bulgaria

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

I would like to be able to play MS Flight Simulator 2020, Forza Horizon 5, CoD Warzone, Elden Ring, Path of Exile, Diablo 2 Ressurected, Latest Total War game, Mount & Blade 2, Fallout 4, Witcher 3 etc. at 1200p, maxed settings at a stable 60+ fps or even better.

On the side I would also like to be able to stream from time to time, since I already do that for my Blood Bowl 2 games. It would be great if I could also be able to stream PoE, Diablo, WoW, or other games I find interesting between BB matches.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Currently I'm using a 2016 gaming laptop that has a i7-7700hq, 16gb ram and nvidia1060 3gb. It has served me very well, still does the job for old titles and I can even stream BB2 on it with subpar quality.
Besides that I have three Dell U2415 monitors (1900x1200p 60hz) that I use for gaming, listening to twitch/youtube and work from home. However, if I manage to get myself a solid modern setup I am open to upgrading one of those to a 1440p 120hz display that I can dedicate to gaming. The dell monitors are very good for my day job, but aren't exactly intended for gaming and I don't have a gaming use case that uses all three of them in a ultra-ultra wide resolution.

I've never built a PC before, I've only used laptops for the last 10-11 years. I would like to get a desktop this time, since I've read that laptop hardware has been lagging behind desktop variants once again and also me and my friends don't do LAN parties any longer, so mobility isn't much of an issue anymore.

I have spent some time over the last couple of weeks reading about current AMD, Nvidia and Intel products in order to educate myself on their price to performance capabilities, but I have no knowledge regarding power supplies, fans, cases, ram or motherboards, so I still have a lot to learn on that front.

I would like to be able to get fast ram, at least 32GB of it, a quality power supply (i'd rather spend a bit more and sleep soundly), fans that are as quiet as possible and a case that is easy for cleaning, has good air flow and has an dust filter. I have no idea how much all of these titbits will ramp up the cost of the rig, but that's why I specified that can be flexible with my budget. I am willing to spend more for quality products that are built to last. (also my laptop has a fucked up fan and sounds like a helicopter, so anything quieter than that will be a godsend!)

At first I was eyeing AMD's products, since they have very good price to performance ratio, but I do appreciate the integrated graphics that intel CPUs have (I know you can run one of your monitors off of it and it can also keep the machine usable if the dedicated card goes under), their slighly better single core performance and I've read that the extra hardware chip that nvidia 3000 series cards have is a great advantage to have when streaming from a single machine. So I've been really conflicted in deciding if something like 5800x or i5-12600k would be better for CPU and if a 6800XT or a 3080 would be best for gaming + streaming, since it seems that the 3080 is always more expensive and amounts to less FPS in 1080 and 1440p gaming (non-Ray Tracing), but it should handle both tasks better than the 6800xt.

Funnily enough, yesteday I found a refurbished GAINWARD GEFORCE RTX 3080 PHOENIX V1 (LHR) 1952 for "only" 782 € from a shop near my home, which is much lower than any other 3080 that's sold in my country (they usually start at more than 900€).

I've consulted this tracker: https://www.gputracker.eu/en/search/category/1/graphics-cards/facet/2/graphics-chip/nvidia-rtx-3080 and it shows that in EU 820€ is currently the lowest available price (which doesn't include shipment costs to Bulgaria).
Would you guys say if this price is good for a 3080 considering the 4000 series will probably be much more expensive, run hotter and have higher power requirements?
In general, is this a product that is worth building around or should I sit still and wait for black friday sales? Or maybe even longer? Should I wait to see what kind of cards the 7800 and 4080 are going to be?

I've seen that the newest generation of cpus and GPUs have a bit of a performance boost over the last one, but they also have a higher price, higher power requirements and AFAIK a 3080 or 6800 should be good enough to run modern games in 100+ fps in 1440 which is the absolute maximum I would expect right now. I don't plan on going to 4k yet as I expect it to make things much more expensive.

P.S. I have 2 SSDs in my laptop that I could transfer over to a new machine in order to remove the cost of buying new storage right now. Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB & Force MP510 960.1 GB.

You will do better buying a 6900xt, especially used, or a 7000 series GPU. The 6900xt beats the 3080 and can be found used for cheaper. However, that price is not bad and if you can’t find a good deal on a 6900xt you should buy it.

Thank you very much for taking the time to pick these out!
I'll be in a search for a video card deal on black friday, so I'll try to track all of these components as well.

Just to ask, Is this type of DDR4 memory the best possible out of all the DDR4 options? And is DDR5 way too expensive to include right now? I've read that it can bring improved performance with those 6000Mhz sticks, but maybe there are still not good enough motherboards for that route?

You have to define what you mean by "best" before that question can be answered.

While DDR5 can offer improved performance the cost of that route means lower performance GPU choices to meet budget.

"Best" as in highest frequency for dd4. I.e. performance wise. I don't really care for RGB, so I definitely don't consider that as a bonus 🙂

There are higher speed DDR4 memory kit. It's unlikely any would achieve noticeable improvement in gaming. Unless one intends to explore memory overclocking.

  • 4 weeks later...

Currently, a local shop in my city has only three 3080s left. Those guys are up for 800-850$ and are called:

  1. GIGABYTE GEFORCE RTX 3080 TURBO 10G (REV. 2.0) (LHR) GV-N3080TURBO-10GD

  2. GAINWARD GEFORCE RTX 3080 PHOENIX V1 (LHR) 1952

  3. PALIT GEFORCE RTX 3080 GAMINGPRO LHR NED3080019IA-132AA

Are any of them worth the 800-850$ asking price right now?
I have no idea if the 4070ti will be a comparable video card, I could wait out for it to come out, if it's going to have better features and similar performance.
There are 4080s available already, but their price is laughable: 1400-1650$

Some other people have said that these cards are not really worth their asking price of 800$ right now.
I would really like to get a 4080 and that is possible. However, at the same store a 4080 costs 1400$ at the cheapest, which is a very disheartening proposal...

After a lot of searching for a good deal on a new card I managed to find a good second hand card - MSI 3080 Ti SUPRIM X 12G.
I saw that just this week AMD have released the 7800x3d and it is blazing fast for its price point. It seems like a great CPU to pair up with this video card.
Could you guys suggest what kind of Motherboard, Power supply, fans and RAM I should try to pick up for such a combo?
