Sorinator AV-15

Hey I have a storinator AV15 for work and I wanted to set it up and I don't know how to which Raid to use I have 10TB terabyte Seagate ironwolf drives for a total 150TB and it's gonna be used by 4 editing computers and use as archive as well does anybody know what the best raid configuration is to keep as much storage but also be fast enough?

There is so much more to this then what raid to use…

What OS will you be using? What networking do you have, because if it’s normal gigabit… your not going to want to edit video off of a NAS over gigabit, and gigabit is slower then a single harddrive anyway, so speed of drives won’t really matter much since your network will be the issue. How experienced are you with all of this as that will dictate if you should go windows or something like truenas. How much RAM does the system have? Because without enough RAM, truenas would likely be a poor choice.

I wouldn’t suggest editing off the NAS. I would put SSD’s in the editors machines for local storage of current projects, and if they need to access archived video, that’s where the NAS comes in.

Personally I would use truenas and use RAID Z2. But remember, RAID is not a backup, RAID is just to increase uptime, protect against corruption like data rot, and provide a way to mitigate single drive failures.  Any critical data, back it up to the cloud.

I have true Nas with a dual 10 gigabit network card and have 32 gigs of ram I'll look into the raid 2 how about a raid 5 or 6?

You will likely want way more RAM… editing video off a nas is not going to be very fun, but the larger your ARC the better chance you have at it being somewhat bearable.

I am honestly not sure what is best. But to help in understanding, ZFS doesn’t use “raid 5 or 6”, it would be Z1 or Z2. I wouldn’t do any less than Z2, but if performance is what matters, I’d look at a mirrored pair of vdevs potentially.

If your seriously looking to edit off the NAS, I’d post on the truenas forums and ask for advice… but I can already tell you they will say don’t try it.
