Bought parts for a whole new build, ryzen 5 5600x, 5700xt and a gigabyte b550 aorus elite mobo. I knew I would likely need to update the bios, except its not working, bios flash led never lights up when its pressed, the usb im using has a led indicator which flashes for a second but then goes off.

Any ideas welcome, thanks.

B550 motherboards, should support Ryzen 5000-series out-of-the-box.

Even if it is using an older BIOS version.

You have two ways of updating the BIOS on this motherboard.

1) The old fashioned way of going through the UEFI menus

2) Using Q-Flash button on the back

It looks like you are using option #2 here.

Basically, follow the official video.

  1. Download and extract/unzip the BIOS file.
  2. Format a USB stick to FAT32.
  3. Copy the BIOS file (ONLY) onto the blank USB stick. DO NOT put it into a folder on the USB stick.
  4. The BIOS file (using the latest F15d as example) should be already named "B550AE.15d"
  5. Plug the USB stick into the USB port SPECFICALLY labelled with "BIOS" -- the other USB ports won't work

  6. Make sure the motherboard is getting power (i.e. switch on the back of the PSU is flipped on).
  7. Press the little Q-Flash Plus button.
  8. BIOS flash LED will blink, blink, blink....for 4 ~ 5 minutes, while it is flashing the BIOS.
  9. Stop blinking = BIOS flashing is done. Finished.
