Combo units = Jack of all trade master at none.

Keep them separate if you want to keep you sanity.

I can't help you with Verizon modem box. Here in Canada, it's the service provider that give you or make you pay a monthly fee for it, and these boxes are locked from accessing any information about their network, nor provides them, so that you use their overpriced box and nothing else.

As for routers, it depends on your needs. How many wireless devices you have? are you in apartment or house? If house, how many floors? and where is the location of your model (center of the house or corner), is it a big house or not. If it's an apartment, are the walls drywall (modern) or cement (old) or wood (really old), if it's house, is it drywall or wood walls.

Cement wall, are metal studs, where they put a metal mesh to form a wall, and you had a specialist at the time (no longer exists), who poor a cement compound on it, and tried his best to make a straight wall.

Wood walls are similar, they are wood studs, with lots and lots long and thin strips of woods, then plaster is applied on it, and tried to make a straight wall.

These question are needed, because it will indicate which price range router we are looking for, including to look for or not: extended range ones or not.
