Im planning on a new build in a couple of months time and would like the input of this awesome community (which ive stalked for ages!).

Loation: UK

Budget: £1,000 - £1,200

Usage: Gaming(at 1080p for now) and web browsing mainly.

This is my first build although I have upgraded various PC's in the past, though were talking 7-8 years ago.

I plan to OC although fairly light at the beginning until I get more confident, again not having done it for a long time.

I am TOTALLY not bothered about aesthetics, I prefer performance at the cost of looks. A quiet system would be nice but again is not a priority.

I like RTS, FPS and RPG games mainly but play a bit of everything

I would like the system to be as future-proof as possible.

So far Im thinking:

CPU: i5 4670K 3.40Ghz £150

GPU: Asus R9 290 Direct CUII OC 1000Mhz £320

CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D14 £60

MOBO: ASUS Maximus Hero VI £150

OS: Windows 8.1 x64 OEM £80

Mem: G.Skill Trident X DDR3-2400 2x4GB (8GB) £65 (bit of an uneducated guess)

total = £825

I already own a 250gb SSD and 500g WD caviar black for storage and all peripherals.

Q's:

Is the hero VI overkill?

Any case recommendations and how many extra case fans would I need if any?

would prefer an IPS monitor but as game in a small room close to monitor nothing too large.

any other input/where have I gone drastically wrong!

EDIT - im thinking 500w PSU?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum enjoy your stay.

Q's: Yes yes it is.  I'd recommend the define r4 or the h440. You won't need any extra fans. Is the monitor included in the 1000-1200 budget? Looks good I'll still make a recommendation once i know the monitor part.

Looks like that ram will be too big to fit the nh-d14 on top of. Also I would swap the 290 for a 780 and get a cheaper motherboard.

Other than that, looks good.

Ah. Good point looks like it needs to be under 44mm. Thanks. The patriot viper 3 izaya mentioned should do the trick. Why the 780 over the 290? They seem similar performance wise to me. Nvidia's technologies on the card are definitely more appealing but I'm not sure worth the £80 extra?

Yep already got SSD and HDD so any ideas where I could put the extra £160? To be honest this build looks good I might just update some peripherals or save for future upgrades.

Thanks for the input. Did you go g45 over 43 because of more pice x16 slots?

I was also looking at the U2414H looks a great monitor.

Why the 780 over 290?

1) yep, if you ever want to run SLI its a better board.

2) The U2414h is a fantastic monitor. I dont know anyone who has anything bad to say about it, unless you really really really want 144hz.

3) The 780 is a slightly more expensive and slightly more powerful card. Plus I have a personal preference for the green team... Dont hate me :)

Ha I've always had nvidia and had no (major) problems but I can spread the love to anything that performs well for less.

1 question though, as I'm air cooling would the R4 limit air flow seeing as it's a case designed for noise reduction?

The R4 has enough airflow to adequately cool these components. There are dozens of air cooled R4 builds roaming around this site.
