Budget (including currency): $2000 usd

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: games

Other details: I currently have a system with an i5 6600k and gtx 970 and am looking to replace it with a new build and use my old one for my kids to play on.

I play a lot of strategy games that I read can be harder on CPU's and not just graphics card.

It will be about a month from now when I will be making the purchases. Planning my first trip to a Micro Center around then. 😊

I will also need a new monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I'm not too picky with mouse and keyboard. My current monitor is 27" 1080p 60hz.

Also not real picky on cases for appearance more for performance. I have a setup where the tower is on the other side of the wall.

Thank you in advance for any help and feedback!

Sincere advice here, Are you open to buying a used system? Quite a lot of people will be looking to do a straight upgrade to new hardware in the next month or so, and there have been quite a few good deals on Hardwareswap, and Ebay if you know what you are looking for 🙂

Its hard to say in a month, as b650 should be out by then and whatever Intel is pushing out for 13th gen, and we should get our first look at RDNA 3.

You will probably be in the range of 7600x+b650+32 GB 6000 DDR5, or 13600k+z790+32 GB 6000 DDR5, And then GPU will be whichever is the best price or buy a used 3000 series NV or 6000 series AMD , and get a PSU+SSD+Case and such.

If you're buying in a month then I'd definitely be waiting for raptor lake to see what it offers

I'd strongly echo this. If buying in a month wait for raptor lake.

But just to give you something to ponder in the meantime, here's one that gets everything in just under budget:

An extra $20 would get you a Ryzen 7 5800x3D. Also, if you're really not picky about the keyboard, the EVGA Z12 is actually a decent keyboard and can usually be had for $20.

I'm a huge AMD fanboy but I'm not impressed at all by the Zen 4 value proposition. Once they bring down the total platform costs maybe I'll change my mind, but right now I can't recommend it unless budget isn't an issue. Raptor Lake looks interesting though. I'd wait if I were you.

If OP were buying today, they could get a faster GPU, a better (1440p 180Hz) monitor and a mechanical keyboard and still spend $300 less than this.  The only downgrade being a 1TB SSD / 2TB HDD config, but the 2TB SSD you had on there was over $200, while a regular 1TB gen 3 NVMe is $60 and a 2TB HDD is $50 (the HDD is negligible honestly, a 1TB SSD is enough for most people).
