Hi everyone,

first time posting on the forum 🙂

I am looking into upgrading my rig with a new GPU.

Current setup:

i5 8400

2x8GB DDR4, non XMP

Asus Strix R9 380 OC 4GB

Samsung Odyssey G5 32" 1440p monitor

I am currently considering 2 used GPUs:

GTX 1070ti - 210 USD (Gainward Ghost variant)

or RTX 2070 - 260 USD (MSI Gaming Z variant)

For my current needs, i believe that the 1070ti might be sufficient for my current needs, but the 50 USD difference makes 2070 compelling for a bit of futureproofing.

Just for context, i am aware that the upgrade from R9 380 is very noticable and basically anything will be an upgrade and a half, but i want to make a purchase and be content for the next 3-5 years at least. (After all, i am still getting 50+ FPS on the titles i like to play with the 380, with some (slowly increasing) degradation of details 😄 )

Which card would you suggest?

I want my purchase to be the best possible bang for buck, of course.

RTX is not something i am too much interested in ( i am aware that the FPS drawbacks are quite high in many cases), but the DLSS support makes a case for the 2070, since i plan on playing with it - upscaling to 1440p from 1080p.

Thank you in advance :)

If there are only 2 used GPUs available, between those two, go get the 2070. The performance difference is quite a lot for not a lot more money, and plus, as you said, DLSS.

If there are more cards available, maybe find a RX 6600 XT instead, faster than he 2070 and newer. DLSS is not such a big deal anymore since FSR 2.1 is catching up.

@Dukesilver27-
Here are also additional options i have found and considered on my local "craigslist":

Zotac GTX 1080 8GB - 225 USD (used for six months for mining, reportedly never went over 60 degrees celsius)

MSI Armor OC RTX 2060 Super - 260 USD

Regarding the 6600 XT, i have found one for 330 USD, ROG Strix variant
I am a bit hesitant to jump to that price (although i can afford it with no problem) since there will always be "something better for 50 bucks more"

Both of this is a no go, especially the 1080, 6 months? Come on, who he's lying to?

Yea this is a bit much, if you can't find a used one, then don't bother with it.

The 2070 is definitely the way to go.

Unfortunately, all of the cards i have mentioned are used ones, even the 6600 XT 😄

Will try to cop the 2070 then, should i target some specific manufacturers/models or should the MSI Gaming Z card be fine?

Where are you located ? In the US a new RX6600 is $250, it don't make much sense to get an used 2070 (which perform quite the same) at the same price...

Oh, I thought it was new. Gotta be a third world country eh? I feel ya.

Honestly any card is fine, 2070 is not hot enough to warrant super great cooling.

@PDifolco

Hi, im located in Croatia

Here are the best new/best used prices for these cards:

1070ti -  360 USD new, 210 USD used

2070 - 500 USD new, 260 USD used

6600 XT - 460 USD new, 330 USD used

Basically, i have no problem buying used hardware, so i would prefer to save some money there 🙂

Prices have just started to drop but are still over the top

My R9 380 was purchased about 5 years ago for 30 USD (still holding on like a champ), peak price during the shortage was 150+ USD, now it dropped to around 80+ USD

There's 6600 (non XT) for less than 300EUR new in Germany, can't you get one ?

The cheapest 6600 (non XT) i can find NEW is the XFX RX6600 Speedster SWFT210 Core Gaming, 8GB which costs 350 EUR

Is the 6600 non XT better than the RTX 2070? (if im buying used, the 2070 is cheaper around 40 EUR)

Not sure if i understood correctly, but the ARMOR variant cards are more focused on durability and stability, eg. on the fans and temperatures?

I guess that the Gamin Z/Gaming X cards are more focused on boost clocks and RGB, with a bit higher price, right?

Honestly, I don't have a clue mate! But yes, those X or whatever name cards are usually higher clocked and presumably more performance. But, could not give you a definite answer.

The XFX SWFT210 RX6600 is 289€ in Germany (and 10€ less in France)

I suppose shipping shouldn't be expensive (like 10€), and you're in the EU so no tax/import fees

https://de.pcpartpicker.com/product/wdvdnQ/xfx-radeon-rx-6600-8-gb-speedster-swft-210-video-card-rx-66xl8lfdq

They're kinda equivalent with the 2070, slight advantage to the 2070, but you'd get the newness and warranty...

Well, now im lost again 😄

that new 6600 sure does sound compelling with its warranty

is there any benefit of going with and used 2070 then?

i don't really care for raytracing, except maybe to set it to low if applicable, productivity is not a priority as well.

i just want a good and reliable card which can carry me for 3+ years

must be comfortably play games on high/max at 1080p and mid/high at 1440p

i thought that the used 2070 (260USD MSI Gaming Z) was the best bang for buck, now im not really sure 😕

  • 1 month later...

Hello everyone, I just wanted to post an update and a last thank you to all the people involved 😄

I have managed to grab an EVGA 3060 card for 300 EUR (about 100 EUR less than the usual used price of this card) and am very satisfied with it.

If that deal didn't show up randomly, i would have bought the RX6600 instead, but this seems a bit better buy.

Thanks for the advice!
