Nephew's 18th, 3060ti, R5 3600, 32GB 2666 or 16gb 3600?

So I'm planning for my Nephew's 18th birthday present, I've been steadily upgrading him since he was about 10-11 years old (started with a pentium 3258 / HD 7870)

 

He's currently stuck at the end of the LGA1150 line i7 4790 (non K) and a rx580. Not worth the K series chips as the mobo required would be expensive and pointeless.

 

Planning on giving him a 3060ti and a ryzen 3600 on a decent b450 board so he still has some upgrade options. Plus new PSU and NvME ssd etc.

 

Have 32GB of 2666 DDR4 on hand that has been easily OC'd to 3000 in the past (and is white so will blend with my planned buiild well)....worth getting him a new 16GB kit of 3600 DDR4? Not spending the cash to get 32GB of new ram.

 

This will be the last upgrade I do for him as a gift.....He'll probably be earning enough soon to get his own stuff.

2666 might a bit too slow but it could be fine and 32gb might be more handy id say use the one on hand

3000MHz on a 3600 isn't bad. It would most definitely get him up and running. You would squeeze out like an additional 10-20 fps (maybe) upgrading to 3600MHz on a 3600. 

Additionally, the build you have planned sounds like it would be leagues above what he has. Even with 3000MHz RAM.

I'd leave the RAM as is, 32GB is nice and if running at 3000MHz, more than adequate.

 

Maybe look into more SSD space too, SATA or NVMe doesn't matter. How are his peripherals?  Headset, speakers, keyboard, mouse, etc?

Use the RAM you have on hand, and see if you can OC it to 3200+ on this platform. I assume that the last time you tried OCing it was on an older AMD platform. If not, 3000 is still fine. It'll be a good upgrade over his current build either way.

You have the 3600 already? The 5600g dropped to 110-120$ atm.

Yeah my thinking was more ram would be more useful, minimum specs are gonna get higher soon. Thanks for the reply

Agreed, I've ran a 3600 on 3200 for a while and though I've noticed some bottleneck with a 3080 I thing a 3060ti would be more forgiving. Thanks for the reply

Good point, the 5600g is a solid chip too and that price is nice.

Well tbh the last time I oc'd that ram it was in a 4x16gb config, so maybe 2x16 will be more fogiving, might get it to 3200mhz. Will have  a play (though OCing ram is my least favourite thing to do lol)

If you dont have a b450 already get em a decent one known to accept even a 5950x :p. The b450 tomahawk and mortar are under 100 and do that

It will be parts, then building into his current case later. Got him a Corsair 4000D airflow case and RGB fans etc at Xmas last year.

I have the b450 TUF mATX or a Tomahawk II max ATX at hand....Bios upgrades aren't really an issue tbh.....as for overclocking, probably wont happen for the single digit increases.

Yeah I've done the last 2 or 3 upgrades with him, tbh I think he can do it himself now but he still likes me to be there just in case.

 

My older (40yr old plus) cousin upgraded and I had to fix it for him.......He tried plugging the 8 pin CPU into his brand new 3080ti.......This was during the GPU shortage as well, paid £1400+ for the 3808ti and nearly fried it lmao.

Well I have a new 500GB NvME SSD to replace his 240gb SATA (prob add his 240GB SATA to storage) I might have a new 3TB HDD to throw in the mix, but that is currently earmarked for my secondary PC that has 4 dying 500GB drives which I want to replace with 3 x 3TB in RAID 1.

 

He bought new peripherals not long back and I got him a new case last Xmas.

I'd boot off the 240GB and use the 500GB for game library, personally.  500GB is woefully small for a lot of the modern games.  Hell, Ark is over 500GB by itself with all its DLC maps and mods..

Yeah well I'm providing enough. He can supply his own damn game storage lol.

 

Booting from NVME is legues ahead of SATA. I know, first world problems right, but it's so snappy and quick, I couldn't go back to SATA or god forbid spinning rust. Even PCIe 4.0 to 3.0 feels lethargic.
