I'm doing my first PC build rn and I've reached the PSU. I got the 12 pin connector in but I'm stumped by the CPU connection. You know how some of the holes are squares and some are... trapezoids I guess? Anyway I'm sure I have the right cable and splitting it apart lines up the 4 pin, but the shapes are wrong for the 8 pin and I don't know what to do? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure they are oriented properly, some boards like puting them upside down and its a nightmare to plug in. Whenever i build computers, i make sure i plug in the CPU power plugs before i even put the board in the case, cause they are that much of a pain.

You're sure you're using the CPU 8 pin and not a PCIe 8 pin? They're extremely similar, but wired differently.

It's hard to see but in the picture with my hand only the top right and second from right on the bottomed are square. And yes, I am certain this is not the PCle cord

These cables are labeled and where they plug into the PSU is also labeled. It should be pretty easy to figure out what goes where based on that. What PSU is this?

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro

It's a CORSAIR RM850x

You received two 8-pin EPS cables with that PSU so grab one of them.

Should be labeled CPU on one of the ends.

Plug it into one of these that's free/not in use by a PCIe cable then plug the other end into the motherboard. The side that splits into 4+4 goes on the motherboard side.

Right, I got all that. The problem is that the holes in the motherboard and the prongs on the cable are not the same. On the motherboard there are 4 square, 4 trapezoid, but on the cable there are only 2 squares. Look I know this is probably frustrating, trust me it is for me as well so please be patient.

From your pictures it looks fine. Its a long standing standard, it plugs right in. Only concern would be if you have it backwards. The clip on the cable needs to be on the catch side of the connector on the board.

So this is what I've gathered, and please tell me if anything I say here is wrong: There are 2 different shapes in the connectors. There are squares and trapezoids. It doesn't actually matter if the shapes line up with the same shape or not.

The trapezoid parts will slot into the square slots, judging by the pics it looks correct, compared it to 3 different EPS cables i have in the cupboard and they look exactly the same, so assuming you're lining it up properly it should just slot in.

The only other thing it could be is if one of the metal contact pins in the cable connector is crushed and not sliding over the metal pin in the motherboard connector.
