If it's the version 1 then make sure you've installed the plastic spacers

Hi there,

I recently opened my PC to clean the inside and add a second GPU for 3D renderings. It's six or seven years old now. I removed the CPU cooler and changed the thermal paste. When I put it back I noticed it's kinda loose, even though the screws are tightly screwed in the spacers onto the motherboard. I don't think it was that loose before and now my CPU temperatures are really high when I start a 3D render or anything more intensive. It goes above 90°C. If I push on the cooler for it to have better contact with the CPU, the temperatures drops. If I lay the whole tower to it's side on the ground instead of it being vertical, the temperatures drops just because the gravity helps the cooler make better contacts with the CPU.

My CPU is an Intel Core i7-5820K while my cooler is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and my motherboard is an EVGA X99 FTW.

What should I do ? Would buying a new cooler fix the problem ? Did anyone had this problem before and found a fix ? Thanks for your much needed help.

That’s a big cpu for such a small cooler..

Id really not do that the hyper 212 has been tested as inadequate for the x3d

can you undervolt the x3d so i can use the old cooler tempararily. i just dont want to have to buy a new everything at once?

test your own use case to see if it's adequate. Your own ambient conditions can be very well suitable for this CPU.

if I'm not mistaken, the Hyper 212 can be mounted two ways because of its symmetrical design right? Try flipping it around, even though that should be identical the coldplate might be warped a bit and it could help.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Not really actually. The 5820k is not a hot running cpu like at all.

I just assume everyone overclocks 😄

I really should quit doing that.

I found what was the problem and now my cpu reached a maximum of 64°C for the exact same scene to render ! I'd like to thank everyone for your quick replies. The ones from @Tomberry and @SimplyChunk in particular geared me towards the answer.

After further inspection of the user manual, I found that there was two sets of spacers coming with the cooler, one taller than the other. I had installed the wrong one for my cpu sockets many years ago. Somehow my temperatures were decent before I opened the case recently. My guess is that I had applied too much thermal paste back then which had kinda glued the parts together 😅

By miracle, I found the box containing the parts coming with the cooler far in the back of a closet and I replaced the spacers with the right ones.
