Hello everyone :) I switched over from my PS3 to PC not long ago (awesome decision ;)) and decided to buy borderlands 2 on steam since i loved it so much on PS3. After seeing gameplay on youtube i noticed how awesome the physx and graphics looked, so this was my incentive to buy it on PC, since i have a GTX 770 which i thought would easily handle this game... right?

The problem is, is that i like to have 60 fps... It's just something i'm picky about. And for some reason, when i put physx on high or even medium on this game, i drop from around 100fps on ultra to around 30/40?! The reason this bugs me is that it looks too awesome to turn off, and with a card of this standard i expected it to run very well, but it doesn't. I also watched various benchmarks on youtube and they say that people get around 100 fps on ultra with physx on cards WORSE than mine? I really don't understand... So sorry for the long post, but after hours of tweaking settings, drivers etc and searching the web, i've came here looking for advice. Am i doing something wrong? Or is this normal, and the benchmarks are off?

Would appreciate any advice, and posting your specs and average fps on ultra with physx would also be helpful too. Thanks :)

Physx taxes your gpu

But really this bad? I thought a 770 would easily handle this game?

What CPU? When I had the 780 and 8350, I was getting over 60.

CPU is an i5 4670k, stock clocks. So this shouldn't be a bottleneck, right?

CPUs add frames. If you look at the BF4 CPU benchmarks, there's a difference in avg framerate from low AMD Quads all the way up to 6 core Intels. According to that chart, all CPUs limit the GPU to an extent. So, no matter what our CPUs are holding us back.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I still don't believe it's my CPU that is the case though, as physx is assigned to the gpu, so i would have thought that it is the gpu that is struggling.

PhysX is unnecessarily taxing even on high end Nvidia cards, that's why I and many others aren't a big fan of it.
But a drop from 100 to 30/40 does sound insane. That's the exact same performance I get with my HD 7970 & FX 8320 @ 4.6Ghz when I turn PhysX to high which makes me think that you might be inadvertently unloaded PhysX to your CPU.

That's what i was thinking, the drop seems way too extreme. Is there a way to tell if physx is utilising my cpu instead of gpu? I selected gpu in nvidia control panel so thought that was it. Maybe the game is just poorly optimised...
